This is about as small potatos as you can get, but it still irks me......
I hate buying from Dan's Comp. But when I do it's usually because I have tried everything else first.
This time I ordered a chainwheel shim. Here is the picture of what I ordered taken directly from their website:

See the blue field? It specifies SILVER. See the big picture? It's SILVER in color!
Here is what I received today:

Does THAT look SILVER? Even the Item # has "SILV" in it!!!
So I call the high school burnout answering phones at Dans and told him I received what looked to be a black oxide shim when I clearly ordered silver. His response: "Yea, thats too bad. Theres nothing we can do about it. I don't even know anything about those things."
HUH? WHAT?
FUG Dan's COMP! Never again!

Why not call back and politely ask to speak to the manager?
OR go to your LBS and order it from them...allowing you to get what you want with a real, live person to talk to AND keeping them in business at the same time.

It's just the fact that Dans has never failed to fail.
Each of the three times I have ordered something small from them...there has been complications.
I'm not even upset (see my reply to the first post), I just found the clueless customer service frustrating.
FYI - LBS told me Seattle Bike Supply does not carry shims (and I couldn't find it on SBS website either) or I would have bought it from my LBS six months ago.
I guess life is pretty good when all I have for drama in my life is a different-colored chainring adapter, eh?

Why don't you just call and let them know they sent the wrong part?? I'm sure they would make it right. My LBS doesn't stock a lot of BMX anymore so there are times when I have had to order from Dan's, and I have had any problems. Before you started slamming Dan's did you give them the chance to make it right? I have found in the past that some companies will send the correct part and on small bits like this, tell you to keep the incorrect one.

Dans is A+ in my book, I just got another big order from them last week, it was here in like 3 days, everything was correct, and they even gave me a free T shirt and some Gummy Savers...
Just call'em back, Im sure they will take care of you...

personal experience, the shims come in different colors based on size. If that is all you have to complain about, Life is real good.

I just had the same thing happen with a bikestand that was supposed to be chrome from Rackbarn on Amazon. Its black. It's even a different brand. Didn't even fit a 20" bike so I had to adapt it. A little frustrating but oh well.

I just received my shipment from Dan's Comp in blazing fast speed. It was exactly as I ordered it and I was thoroughly impressed. I could not have been more pleased. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. I agree, if your not getting the satisfaction you require you need to speak with a supervisor to make it right. Good luck...

i would much rather support my lbs, but it is sorta in a "lower income" neighbor hood. I ask the owner to carry brand name bmx parts, but he says "kids around here cant afford stuff like that". So I ask him if he can get ANIMAL Hamilton pedals , oddy skim milk bars, primo wall tires. He looks at me like I have 3 heads. I tried.
I even told him I would rather buy from him(even though i would most likely pay double).
But I dont think he is really up on todays BMX market.
But I do buy parts that are off brand for beater bikes, and I bought my 06 sport from him.

As I stated earlier in this thread: my LBS does not carry the shims and told me their distributor (Seattle Bike Supply) didn't have them either. Thats the ONLY reason I went to Dans Comp.

Dan's is GOOd in my book, several orders without a hitch, and I've used them since 1999.
J&R is also GOOD...LBS around these parts suck.
BMX/Freestyle is almost impossible to find.

Be glad they even make the shim you need. A simple color change is easy! I have ordered from Dan's in the past and have had no problems. If you are really that upset about it ask for a refund.

pquinn - You brute force is making the shim "walk out" or that old junky profile spider. Agree, the profile shims are color codes by size, usually silver, gold, or black. Could always mill one down .003" and have is chromed.

The LBS is the reason that there is a DANS. His LBS couldn't even get him a shim. IF you have a good LBS, happy for ya.
But, Jesus Murphy, a thread about you getting the wrong color 50 cent part and now DANS sux.
PM me and I'll trade ya silver for the black

If that's a sharp sprocket you may need to open up the ID size in the sprocket so it will lay in snug. Do not press it in like bearing cups cause it will keep popping out! Bin der dun dat!

it's a beefy tree dirt jumping sprocket, and it does sit in there snug like a bearing cup, keeps walking on out

It's the prinicple of it, right? Yes, we should support a LBS but ...
... any time you call customer service and get someone who's clueless - that's frustrating. I'm with you on that one! Maybe the shippers/packers, etc are clueless ... but AT LEAST have the customer service people be 'clued in'. Sheesh!

I've never called Dan's, but I have ordered stuff over the 'net from them and have been satisfied. (BTW I realize the intent of this post.....just chiming in and relaying my experiences too).
This past week I needed a headset for my 20" build-up. Dan's had the one I wanted for $25ish plus the $8ish shipping charge for a total of around $33. I could have got a bro-deal on it from the manufacturer but I needed it in a hurry and usually bro-deals take awhile and it is difficult to be *****y about time limitations when someone is comping you something or giving it to you at OEM cost. So, anyway, in an attempt to support my local shop, I called them to check to see if they had the same headset. They did. They wanted $40 for it plus tax (6.5%). I told him that I could order it from Dan's for around $33 including shipping, and that if he could match that price I would drive over and pick it up, and pay the tax over and above that. He said no way and got b@tchy with me. So guess who got my money?
I want to support my local shop as much as anyone, and heck, I used to work in the same shop as seasonal help over the summers. But its hard to do so when they try to make it so difficult. I understand there are other costs associated with a brick and mortar business compared to internet/mail order, but still, he had enough mark up on it that it couldn't have been that big of a deal to drop it to the Dans + shipping price. I know that bike shops don't make a lot of jack on complete bike sales, it's the after-the sale stuff, components, accessories that they make their money on. Why chase that business away when a customer has went out of their way to buy from them?

I have to weigh in on this and say that this whole thing is indicative of an overall problem pervasive in the retail bike industry. It's a problem that has existed for 30 years. I'm talking about the rampant disrespect for the colors and parts the customer wants. I've f***ing had it man, seriously. All my life I've dealt with this crap. I remember as a kid spending almost a year picking out parts and colors for my new PK Ripper. I stayed up all night night combing thru catalogs and making detailed lists of every part I wanted. I spent hours with the "dude" at the bike shop in 1983 telling him exactly what part and what color to use. I want a silver tuff neck power disc and a blue takagi chain ring. I want the cool chain with the different color silver links. But 2 weeks later what do I get? A blue disc and a blue chain ring and a stock chain. The pro-neck is silver, I said blue. The seat clamp is a silver suntour and I said I wanted a blue tuff neck clamp. It's bullsh*t man!
Then, 5 years ago I bought a PK Ripper XL frame and picked out these cool silver braided brake cables and silver levers. When I pick the thing up they've built it with black stock cables and black levers. SON OF A B*TCH! Almost 20 years later and nothing has changed. Is it the same guy? I can't tell.
Seriously, most bike shop people just don't care. They don't appreciate the esthetic aspect of bike building. Dude, you got a black shim because Dans Comp can't imagine anyone caring. If the pedals turn, everything is fine. But I feel your pain, really I do.
I'm being a little tongue-in-cheek here, but it really is something I've noticed.

I've ordered from Dan's comp plenty of times. If your adamant about colors when you order you'll get what you want (if it's in stock at the time of order)
Otherwise you have to wait or take any available color.
