reilley1 i can't tell as much as i would like to about this picture. the kid in the middle picture. yes he has only one leg. i dont know his name i wish i did. this is one of my favorate pictures. this guy would race the down hill track with no fear. he didn't come in last place either.
cant really say what year about 1972 or 73 ? notice the old paper number plate.the track i am pretty sure is solodad sands. this track was one of the big long down hill tracks. this picture was taken near the end of the course. he wasn't very high, but you can tell he was moving. thr tire flat to the rim. the ape hanger handle bars, are they bending? looks like it. the last thing i can say for sure about this picture is that he did not crash. not this time anyway. the kid had guts. hope that helps.

Rick,
It's very cool when you chime in and vividly paint the picture of what was happening back then. Hope to meet you sometime soon.

Soledad was a campground up Soledad Canyon.
It was one of those tracks where the starter would count to 60 and let the next class go... "if you fall get up!" was what Ernie would tell us at the riders meeting.
The starting gate used towards the end of it's rein was really cool, it said "Ride Saddleback Park"

like jeff said soledad sands race track was on soledad canyon rd. the camp grounds said jellystone park at the gate. it had a picture of yogi bear. the park is at the acton end of the canyon, and is still there. the name might be different. i think i still have a bumper sticker for the park. good races & good memoies. the good old days.

Thanks Rick & Jeff. There is still 2-3 campgrounds on Soledad Cyn. One appears closed w/a killer empty swimming pool I wanna skate!

Anyways, next drive-by, I'll have my eyes open, looking for that gnarly downhill track.
Thanks again guys

soledad did have a pool with a club/snack bar next to it. as i recall the pool was all shallow. no deep end for diving. might be 4' at the deepest part. driving in from the acton end of the canyon the park would be on the left hand side, and i think it was the first park. the track was stright back, and 1/2 way up the mountian via fire road. also look for a big 10 lane wide fiberglass slide that you slide down on gunny sacks.
at a later date i might bore everyone with a story of thom lund freestying on that slide on his bike. bloody picture also.

Rick-The campgrounds (coming in from Acton) pn the left are now 'Thousand Trail/Good Sam' type campgrounds, lotta green grass, and shallow pools. I thought it might have been (on rt coming from acton, right before you hit the 14 fwy) there are 3 campgrounds, and I think a Paintball shooting site. The 1st of the 3 c.g.'s has a nice pool, w/9ft deep, nice & wide, and only had about a foot of water in it (before the storm(s). Rick sent a PM to you.

I always thought Soledad Sands was the best race track of the time. It was a treat every time to make the trip from Orange County.

I think someone like Rick Twomey needs a little more title than "looking over the fence".
Sounds like homie was there BEFORE the fence was.
Hal? Rick? Bill? Hook him up!!

....that is such a rad hack pic!.....look at that brown, dusty, substance!....how come it's not black and hard?....easy now.....let's not go off on a tangent.....hey what's that sport where motorcycles ride partly on street and partly on dirt? Jeremy McGrath races in it. .....I know they don't call it motocross......all these pics on this thread look like bmx....er....bicycle motocross.......as in "all dirt, and even some rocks here and there, w/out asphalt"........think about it
