Moosegoose Nick

Hi everyone, I sort of backed myself into a corner on this one.
I need your opinions on what I should do with this.
I have considered just keeping it as is.
I also have thought about doind an all NOS Build up using nothing but Blue Shimano DX components.
Another one is doing a BLUE with RED components.

I WISH that Team was mine...

Rockford 2007 is fast approaching...LOL...

Like I said,I am STUCK...Thanks...

ELF_DUDE
drop back 5 yards and punt NICK. i would sit on the idea until rockford 06 is done then deal with it
leftybmxer
ELF DUDE is right. chill till the bash at the rock 06 is over.if you do build, i would only use nos. nothing used.
QuicksilverBMX
Dont build it, you have 300 others to look at and play with

remember that song Leave It by Yes?

leave it. build a shadowbox for it.
Yasser
Boxed it and send it to Singapore, we have a professional team that can deal wth situations like this. LOL.

I'll bet Rod could fix it so it looked just like a real mongoose.

Just kidding of course. I'd leave it alone. How many Nos mooses do you see? This is the first for me.
rick kast
ditto on randy.
if you build it -it's not NOS anymore.
SoCalDesertRider
Build it and Ride it! That's what it was Made for! And dont forget to have FUN when you Ride it!
forman
leave it be,, put it in a display case ,,,
chopperman48
Nick I would leave it n.o.s. That is a museum piece.
Proto ala Moto
I was going to say the same thing but SoCalDesertRider beat me to it!

It was made to ride 26 years ago.

It's been saved this long, why end it?

I wouldn't crucify you for building it but any NOS built frame doesn't impress me, if it would you, then do it. To build it anything other than OEM would be foolish though. Good luck with the Mongoose snakebellys.
osrlracer
leave it N O S !!!!!!! you have several super nice builds already !!!

Nick, you know how I feel on the subject:

Comic books should be read and enjoyed, not stuffed in some plastic and never looked at.

Toys should be taken out of the package and played with and displayed. Not stored in some plastic case and shoved in a closet hoping they increase in value.

Cars should be driven. Not parked in a garage collecting dust.

BIKES SHOULD BE BUILT AND RIDDEN. Not put behind glass like some piece of fine china.

Well, for that matter, fine china should have food served on it.

But, what the heck do I know. I'm just a comic book readin', toy displayin', car drivin', bike ridin' kook!

Follow your heart Nick, it will show you the way.

Leave it NOS. You already have 8 or so to ride. This is still true NOS. Once you bolt parts on it, it is not. Put it in a case.
Capt. Nemo
I don't want to sound like a smart a**, but I just want to make sure I understand the terminology being used here.

NOS means New-Old Stock, correct?

So, lets say 20+ years ago the original owner of this frame, probably a bike shop, decided to build up this frame with new parts at the time. Then the complete bike sat for 20+ years until Nick here buys it from them. Are the frame and it's parts no longer NOS or is it something else. The parts were new, right. They were just assembled. So am I to understand, once something is assembled, it is no longer NOS? Yes? No?

So if Nick decides to build up this frame with all NOS parts, what's the difference? Is there one?

If there is, someone please enlighten me. Personally, I don't care if it's NOS or not. NOS to me means that the parts haven't been beaten for years before I buy them. It's like buying a brand new part. No fatigue, no stress, no wear. Better chance of it lasting longer when I ride it. But everyone collects for different reasons.

A bike ain't a bike until it can be ridden.

If it never gets assembled into a bike, the manufacturer might as well have produced scrap iron, as it never made it's goal of being ridden as a bicycle.

Who wants to see a frame and fork? What good is it?

Give me the complete bike anyday.

I took my NOS unpainted Sting Comp. and gave it it's first chrome coat and slid the seat post in, and the bearing cups in, and built it into a bike for the first time in it's life. I got to be the first to ride it too!

I stand my ground. A bike ain't a bike until you can ride it. Collect frames all you want. I say build it fresh, and ride it nicely, and keep it fresh....as a bicycle.

I’m on the build it side of the fence. Museums are boring; Riding is where it’s at! Take that horse out and throw a saddle on it…have some fun. After all, you can’t take it with you.
SoCalDesertRider
Well said, Ted!

And Capt'n Nemo's definition of NOS is correct.
Spicoli
If you already have a built Moose, Id say leave this one in the box.

But, if this your only Moose, Id say build it and ride it, after all thats why Mongoose built it (for you to ride)...

For something to me to be considered NOS, it has to be in its original packaging and never installed...Ironicaly , I find alot of used parts that are in as good or better condition than a similar NOS items...

PS , I love those bikes, and I dont remember ever seeing a blue one...
oldhed
for the love a' god and all thats holy, build it and let me ride it. nah seriously tho, i agree with the majority.it was meant to be ridden, not stared at.but it is a beauty tho.

all of your mosegooses are hot! You have represented all of the colors. Keep this one as is. By the way Nick I purchased some ACS stoker pedals today. After talking to you about them at the midwest show. stay cool http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

If it were chrome - I'd say build it up because there is no paint to get scratched. And you could always decide to take it back apart without telling that its ever been built.

But being that it has that awesome factory blue paint job with original decals - I would absolutely cringe at the thought of scratching it up with a seatpost clamp and other parts.

Let me quote Ted here: "If it never gets assembled into a bike, the manufacturer might as well have produced scrap iron, as it never made it's goal of being ridden as a bicycle."

I'm with him. It's really a philosophical question: if you hang a chair upside down from the ceiling, it is no longer a chair. It's a funny looking chandelier. It has lost its utility and thereby lost its definition. Lost its meaning.

Of course, there are other ways to define things. 500 years from now a new, never assembled bicycle frame from the 20th century will make an intriguing artifact for a museum of culture. However, you will be dead. Why not enjoy it now?

All of this NOS stuff in boxes kind of makes me sad. It seems so useless not on a bike. So what, so you've got the box...it's freakin' cardboard. You threw out the frame boxes of your youth because you didn't care...you wanted to put your bike together and ride.

Now, if there was a big time Museum/Hall of Fame, sort of a Cooperstown of BMX that BMXers of all ages and eras could enjoy, I'd say, send it there. I guess the ABA has some kind of museum...haven't seen it myself, though.

I've always said that just owning the stuff seems empty, like collecting Faberge eggs or rare emeralds...so what? What can you do with artifacts? Keister them and smuggle them into the afterlife?
Moosegoose Nick
Thanks to all who took the time to reply. I think I'm going to display it at Rockford this year and begin the long hunt for the parts I want for this to be built for Rockford 2007.
I'm, thinking of an all NOS Shimano DX group, cranks, pedals, hubs, seat post, stem, I think you get the picture.I do have a lead on an NOS Mongoose suede seat already from a buddy I know in L.A.
I realize the cost involved, which is quite a lot,but I do have several Moose's I could always sell to finance this one of a kind build.Like I said I COULD SELL them if I need to.

I'll keep you posted......

Hey Nick, just one more small word of advice. Remember why you are building these bikes. I believe you are doing it for YOU, and what makes YOU happy. As soon as you start doing it to impress your peers, I feel you've lost the soul of any hobby. Stay true to yourself. Forget about Rockford, and remember why you started collecting in the first place.

Peace,
-Karl.
