conservation of linear momentum.
when bike speed vector goes to zero (or negative, even beter!)
(m1+m2)v1=m1*v2
I love physics...

The Duke of Oakley was the master of the flair. He has a hat, suspenders and wing thing on, and this for lake jumping. LOL!!!!!!

Awesome shots! Love the backflip! The only time we went lake jumping, we got in trouble for dunking this other guys bike....not our own. Wooohooo! Oh....we didn't get any photos either.

Lake jumping is so much fun.
That ramp is 5' tall with an 11' tranny.
I actually want to make one just as tall with about a 13' or 14' tranny because when you hit that one going really fast, it's too quick.
I pulled a double flip off that ramp into the water.
Flips aren't very hard if you try them into the water first. It's actually kind of fun to do "half gainers" into the water while still on the bike.
I've also done flip 360's, flip turndowns, flip no-handers and flip tables into the water. With total failuers all mixed in, of course. If you put a shirt on for your first few attempts, it will take some of the sting off if you screw up.
I need to find a picture that I have of one of my friends doing a flip over a police boat at the dock.
That was a pretty cool cop.

Looking at TJ's pic it seems like there was an international mandate to have a fat guy hanging out underneath the ramp

No brakes , 45/16 gearing , plenty of room , no traffic & that BIG hill in the background to get as much speed as you could before hitting the ramp , crazy airtime followed by a soft landing in the water , the cool non impact alternative in summer to skateparks , dirt jumps & racing.

There was a bike available for any who turned up to have a go (friend or stranger who happened to wander by) & I think one of the parents that came down would bring a BBQ for lunch as well.
As you can see life was pretty tough for us all back then.....we only had Redlines with alloy cranks & tuffs on them instead of whatever TJ is riding with 3 piece cro mo cranks & fancy alloy wheels , at least we had better board shorts to wear

Hey TJ...what was the approach like getting to the ramp on the dock? Was there a path though Rich's yard? You must have had quite a bit of speed to get that kind of air. That has to be the all-time classic lake jumping shot but I also remember a good one Toby wearing cutoff JT/Hutch leathers.
Cheers!

Nothing will get the video cameras out faster than the random drunk guy that pulls up to the dock on a boat and wants to "give it a try".
I've gotten some classic footage from feet blow-off to nuts on toptube as soon as they hit the ramp to barely going fast enough and flipping back straight onto their back.
It's pretty funny in a mean way.
Hey, nobody made them do it...

I found some more river jumping pix yesterday when cleaning out my 700Kg document/gun safe that were taken on the same day or around the same time as the other ones I have posted here. I'll post them individually with commentary to bump the thread back into place , & whet your appetites for the summer season headed to the northern hemisphere soon.

If I knew how to properly structure a proper Haiku rather than the 3 line 5,7,5, syllable method. I could probably write a a better one for the photo , but I was riding a Redline MXII in this photo & not a Kuwahura
The hot sweat is gone.
Soft cool water embarces me
Where's my bike gone now.

Unfortunately this is the only one of CoastVL that I found on this sweep & sort , I know Woody was the last person who had the original profile shot of you pulling off some guniunely impressive & insane air from this jump , wether he still has it is another question , he's borrowed that picture for well over 20 years now , and knows how particular I get when wanting/getting things back from people that I have lent stuff to , as their is no statute of limitations to a lend or borrow in my books.

The crowds of random spectators & family groups that would gather on the other side of the river and sit down eat the picnic lunches & watch the "entertainment" at Parramatta Park was always encouraging & it probably gave them something to tell their friends about how they saw a bunch of adults & the kids doing some crazy stuff down at the park on the weekend.

A member of the crew that is now MIA "Sad Andrew" he had a great quarter pipe built in his front yard & I know that we never took _any_ photo's of us tricking out on that ramp at all & we spent a LOT of time riding it , this ones for you Andrew , wherever you are now....

FWIW That stone wall that you can see by the waters edge , was cut & placed theere by convict labour some 220 years ago , Parramatta Park today is still a really nice
place to visit (all the tree's are still there , just a lot bigger now) with historical stuff to see & find everywhere , as well as ride your bikes around or jump them into the river without getting hassled by cops or rangers , over the years the place has just grown shadier & gotten cleaner..

Awesome pix keep them coming.
Unfortunately, I don't have any but we had a ramp set up in my backyard for a year or so. I grew up on a lake so it was natural to launch yourself into the water. We used a trick ramp, about 4 feet tall, on the waters edge where the land bumped up. The total height of the ramp ended up being about 8 or 9 feet off the water. Down the driveway, off the ramp, into the water.
We used one of those square boat cushions wrapped around the bars to keep the bike afloat.

You know what? I'm gonna build a ramp at the MN cabin this summer and do it again. I've got to get a bike built just for it too, I've got to have something lying around.

Thats about the extent of the Parramatta River jumps that I have in my collection Velocidad , until we can hook up with some other members of our numerous travelling/racing/holiday/weekend crews that we had bitd & scour their old photo albums from bitd & scan on them on the spot with a laptop & scanner that we will just happen to have with us My task now is to try & organise the 300 plus photo's that I looked thru in order to get these pix...plus transfer the old BMX video's I found onto a DVD & upload them somewhere...Matt was talking about his fater in law just getting a DVD recorder that can do the transfer from VHS , as well as lift .jpgs off the video.
Pjbaz , I can only remember one guy temporarily losing his bike in all the jumps we ever made there , he bailed off the bike midair instead of "going down with the ship" & landed harde than in a skatepark fall , that hill in the background gave you one hell of a good run off from 1/2 way up , if you made the extra effort & pushed all the way to the top you could really crank out some serious speed on my redline with it's 46/16 gearing on it , & hit that trick ramp full tilt for a massive launch & give the RC boat guys a real scare , the RC boats were like the guy picking up gold balls at a driving range , they kept their distance when we were out of the water & would buzz us when we landed , so they were a good target to aim for when they were waiting in what they thought were safe waters...
A river jump bike shouldn't be that hard to put together , with spare bits you have around the place , keep it simple , no brake cables or levers to get tangled up on , some grips that stay sticky when wet & are glued on with
an epoxy glue rather than hairspray , I wouldn't recommend using steel flanged Tuff II's , and all the other old school stuff that is in the photo's , now , find a cheap new school beater & strip it down to it's bare essentials , a good solid ramp with some grip tape on it's face is needed if you don't want to risk yer front wheel washing out from underneath you once the ramp gets wet. Shoes are mandatory safety equipment , board shorts are optional but recommened to use in public
This is probably the only way you will get to try & match what you see the guys on the Dew tour or X games are doing today & not break any bones in the process.

Anyone remember the NBA Naational in NY...at a ski area, I forget the name of the place...anyway. There were a TON of people jumping into the pond there and it was filmed for a show back then, early 80s , called Games People Play!
I remember a couple of the pros jumped a tandem cruiser!!!! I was one of the faithful in the water fishing the bikes out of the drink!!
Thats gotta be on tape somewhere.
