About 25 years ago i had a Schwinn Phantom Scrambler and riding home from a Little League game in Wayne i got whapped by a car. The frame bent and it was unridable (sp?) so my father went and got me a chromoly Schwinn frame and fork to replace the steel F/F of the Scrambler.
I want to say it was a Team Schwinn Competition because it wasn't the Sting. The only thing is that I've seen pics of the Competition from a Schwinn catalog on PDF and the one in the pic doesn't have a small brace/support where the down tube meets the head tube.
I'm 90% sure that that support was there on mine but that was a long time ago. I can remember thinking that a Redline frame had the same support although I'm probably wrong about that too.
This was probably sometime around 1980-1981.
Any ideas? If someone could ID it and post pics I'd appreciate it. I'll look for pics and I'll post them if I find them.
Thanks
Norrin

It sounds like you had the strange in between Team Schwinn frame. Did it have the red, white and blue decals on the top and down tubes that said Team Schwinn? It was sold as a frame only (I believe only in chrome) and had the little triangle support like the Redline. I know it's in the 1979 Schwinn catalog. I don't have a copy of the catalog but the frame was a stand alone frame and was available for a couple of years. It was not a Scrambler, or something from the Sting line, it had nothing in common with either of them.
I just found an old picture from the catalog, I can't post pictures here so I'll send it to you in an email.

As I recall, there were three different frames that they put the "Scrambler" name on: the ruggedized stingray, a mild steel version, and a chromemoly version. Sounds like you are referring to the chromemoly one. This was their top of the line frame before the Sting. People I knew that had the frame did have a gusset at the top tube/down tube/head tube junction. Most I saw were called the Competition or SX1000, though Schwinn tended to put lots of different names on the same frame (just different components). There may have been some that didn't have the gusset.
The other non-stingray-type Scrambler frame (mild steel where the seat stays were welded horizontal at the seatpost mast and then were bent down to the dropouts) did not have a gusset.

Yup!! That's the one. Thanks Norrin.
Seeing it and you saying it was a stand alone frame jogged my memory and I remember having the forks from the Scrambler with the Team Schwinn until I swapped it out a little while later for a chromoly set.
I eventually added Suntour cranks, stem and post clamp, a ShotgunII seat, fluted seat post, Shimano DX pedals, Dia Compe brakes with Tech 2 levers, Skyway tuff II's and compIII tires. Then it got stolen from the town library.

I thought that's what you were describing. Hopefully you can find one to replace the one you had stolen. If you do I have a set of the correct decals for it.

Thanks again, Norrin.
Maybe someday I will have my hands on one again.
I'll let you know about the decals.

My little bro had an SX 1000 he got in 77 or 78 full cro mo. that did not have the gusset between the top and down tube, nor did it have the Redline style gusset. It did have the large oval headtube badge. I had an SX1000 bought at the same time same as my bros, same exact frame, but I had the gusset between the top tube and downtube. I have never seen another Sx 1000 like my bros with no gusset at all. Anyone else seen one?
I always kinda thought his frame may have been a transitional design to the Schwinn Competition frame????
Kilo,
E-Mail on the way.
"Beast"... That sounds scary.
A bunch of my friends had some higher end bikes, this was a step up from what had. One step closer to my boyhood racer.

MNW, Try the Schwinn forums. BMX category.
I "think" spistols might still have one for sale. He was going to ebay it after offering it there a while back. I am not sure of all the details.
Give it a try. Some pretty great guys there too! I won't push things and link it, but you can find it!
TC,
Thanks for the heads up. I've been on that site. It's pretty cool, just needs a bit more traffic. I love all those old Schwinns. I've had a Sting Ray, Tornado, Phantom Mag Scrambler and then the Team Schwinn.
I was in contact with spistols yesterday and he already sold the frame on E-Bay a few months ago.
I'll just keep looking.

WOw that brings back memories- I had that frame, a pair of redline cr-mo forks, and GT X large bars
throw in some Sugino 1 piece 180mm cranks, and gold Araya 7xs with Comp III's, and thats my last bike from 1987.
If I recall , I was a bit dissapointed with that frame since it wasnt "100%" cro mo, only the front triangle.
what a spoiled kid I was..
That would be cool to rebuild my last bike from BITD
