I'm in the middle of my 1978 Robinson restoration. At first, I wanted to use a red Kashimax MX seat. Now, I want to use a padded black seat - the kind with the diamond pattern like on many of Tim's bikes.
What is the name of this style of seat, and are they easy enough to find?

Rini's has these for $8

That's the one...but is this the same seat as a 1970s seat? I would like it to be the real deal or identical to the real deal.

I have one that I bought off of ebay. They are made my viscount. Shipping and all was less that $15. If I remember right it was buy it now for $5.95 or something like that.

Just FWIW, I had a 78-79 round hole gusset, euro bb Robinson in 79-80, and my best friend had an 80 RRP gusset American bb Robinson at the same time. Both had the Kashimax seats. I have never seen an old Robinson with the padded saddles. Just thought I would throw that out there.

If that quilted seat has a metal pan I'd use it on a 1978 bike, it's probably plastic though, those seem much newer to me.

Best bet, find an old Schwinn Varsity, steel that seat. Search ebay for Mesinger, Avocet or Troxel.

I have a black non-quilted mesinger from the 70's if your interested.

Sounds like you're thinking of the BMX Products seat that came on Mongeese and other bikes of the late 70's/early 80's. I had one on my my first Cook Bros, which was a '76 or '77 model. They were ok seats, but the metal pan had a habit of poking thru the front end of the seat. In good condition, they're probly a rare find now days. Probly plenty of junkers out there somewhere though that could be had for nothin if found, if you wanted to have it re upholstered.

That seat was a Mesinger, Mongoose had their metal tag put on a Mesinger beginning 1979.
