If you had a chance to go through an Old Bike Shop, what would be the MAIN things you would look for? Id have to say Frame and Forks first, then some Bear Trap pedals ... Cranks .. and so on.
How bout you?

It depends on what they carried. I've been in some old bike shops that didn't carry too much BMX. Aside from really exotic stuff (Hutch cranks, pedals and hubs, cook bros. parts, Son Lite hubs ,reedy pedals, omas and campy bmx, etc.) look for the kinds of things that were destroyed easily from exposure to the elements. Things like tires, snap pads and stickers. Old magazines, posters, banners, and number plates are nice too.
If it has to be done quickly, then, of course, go for the big things that are easy to spot without rummaging around. Frames, complete bikes and boxed bikes. Is there a basement or shed? Where did they keep the used bikes?
I've been in a similar position on several occasions and it can be overwhelming unless you're able to throw lots of money at the owner. I always ended up buying what I really wanted and things I knew my friends were looking for, leaving much behind for my fellow collectors.

Obviously the high dollar stuff to re-sell for project cash. My concern would be with tires, haro plates (lightning), Oakley grips. Things that rot away. F/F sets can get re-chromed, but you can't re-cap comp 2's, or glue the ends of grips back on!

I'll find out soon! A friend of mine owns a building with a old bike shop in it and he is about to take the contents for nonpayment of the rent. Says that when he does I can come and help him git rid of it. Says that there must be a "thousand" bikes. Anyone live in Norcal and have some major cash to lay down when this happens?

I would go to the mental picture of the BMX bike in my head and start with the grips buy any grips from BITD move onto brake levers...and brakes..bars...stems and buy as much as you can afford. I went on a 5 week holliday drove through 4 states stopped at any bike shop and bought all they had. most of the stuff had the original price tag on them A'me grips for 7.95 resell for 25.00 NOS Race inc frame paid 30.00 sold for 290.00. knowing you can get a good price for resale you know you can spend more at the old shop.

That's funny Ted, I think about that thing too - BITD it was like a dinosaur that none of us would have wanted, I think that thing was still on the wall when Tonka switched hands in '98.

I actually got to do this twice. My local bike shop where my first Mongoose came from in '76 closed down in the 80's. About 7 years ago they opened it up and were selling the contents.
Schwinn collectors were there and they thought I was a complete idiot for piling 2 trucks full of old bmx parts. I even found some of the exact items I lusted for as a kid with the price tags still on most everything. I've seen a couple of those Schwinn collectors in the past couple of years and they ask me if I still have that bmx stuff. I smile and say, yep.
I also flew out to L.A. years ago and got the first pick of the old Ralph's Bike Shop inventory. I got a bunch of cool stuff, including CBR Cruiser #01. I shipped home about 10 huge boxes.
It is overwhelming when you see more NOS goodies than you can carry. I don't collect much anymore but it was fun hunting the stuff.
