1st Generation box cranks were made with folded steel and welded on one edge. 2nd generation arms were made from tubular steel.
I thought those in the pics were 1st and the more
rounded ones were second?

Are the first generation 1 or 2 pieces? I think the first generation were made from a c section that makes up all but the rear of the arm. The c section is rolled and the 2 edges on the face are slightly rounded. The rear is a flat plate welded on to the c section and the welds are ground down flat forming a square edges. The second generation are formed out of a tube, all four corners are rounded more than the front corners of the first generation c section.

Ben your correct. I don't think Alan was saying you're wrong. I think hes just expanding on the explanation.
