Hey Mike, the name's Steve Fair. I came to Lawrence in 1989 and have settled down after graduating from KU in 1993. I am the sys admin for the school of Art and Design at KU. I don't think we've met unless you used to ride with Paul Davis or Phil Wasson from Sunflower. Mike Moeller rides the hidden trails regularly when he's in town too. I spend my time riding to work and occasionally I hit Heartland BMX in Topeka. John Zook and I are known to take road trips to the skateparks around KS and MO. I need to ditch my family and go for a ride soon!
Paul Springer
You guys are friggin killin me, Brad I think we were seperated at birth. Hey Mike Welsh, you wanna buy some rittalin?

Brad Apold, ....burn me some Surf Punk cd's man....just kidding....I need to get me some of their stuff since I loaned mine to a so-called-friend and never got them back.....unfortunately I don't have that Sting Ray anymore, that pic is from the 70's....oh how I wish I still had that Schwinn.....

bmxbully....no I don't know anybody around here man. I'm from San Diego although I do know that Phil dude I think. Does he own Sunflower Bikes? I met him when I bought my Cannondale from Sunflower Bikes. He's a really cool dude. I don't know Paul Davis or Mike Moeller. Are the "hidden trails" those trails down by the river, where the 'dude in the van' lives(just kidding bout the dude in the van)? Those trails are awesome. About 4 years ago I was going all out on those trails and went over the bars and landed directly on my right shoulder and separated it(good times...lol). So anyway, it's good to meet you Steve and hopefully we can go riding sometime when you can "ditch your family".....haha.......somehow I never got married or had any kids yet and it's still a mystery to me how I pulled that off.......
Mike Welsh
Nice Surf PUnks pic PaulyMN!....lol......
Paul Springer
Mike Welsh you da man! Are you going to Rockford?
Mike Welsh
Oh I didn't see that about the rittalin PaulyMN....lol......er...how much?....... hehehehehe
Mike Welsh
I have heard Rockford mentioned a few times but I'm a newbie so I really don't know anything about it PaulyMN.......when is it? Is it going to be in Illinois? Illinois would be doable for my brother and I. Have you gone to it before and if so, what's it like?
Paul Springer
I have never been, I am fairly new as well (Dec. 05) but we have a whole crew going down there from Minnesota. I think you need to seriously consider it, if I remember right its the 3rd weekend in June (16,17,18) with Fat Man OS Races, beer drinking, OS bikes on display everywhere and loads of BS and funny stories. It is a HUGE deal if you can swing it? It would be great to see you there.
Mike Welsh
I see no reason why my brother and I wouldn't be able to make that gathering since it's not until June. Wow, it sounds like it will be so cool! I wouldn't want to miss that for anything!
How can I get more details about it? I looked at that "Gatherings" link up there but all it has is past gatherings. I know reilly1 should for sure know the details. You are the first person that actually told me about it(I think). Do you have to be invited? Any info would be greatly appreciated......
Paul Springer
No invite required that I know of, how about I invite you & you invite me and were in... Just keep watching "Vintage BMX Events" and read through what is there currently. I spoke with two guys here locally at a race that have been and they said you cannot miss it, a lot of the OS pro's & BMX pioneers show up as well. If you haven't bought "Joe Kid on a Sting Ray" DVD that also is a must buy! Look on the left margin where all the sponsor's are listed. The thing starts Friday afternoon and I believe ends saturday night with a banquet and awards, sounds like everybody boogies Sunday morning (Fathers Day). That is about as much as I know, anyone else have anything to add or share?

Big Top?
To Big, To Big for her top
When are those strings gonna pop?
Distracting all the surfers
They forget about the waves
No time for tubes
Lets talk about those boobs
Over the shoulder, boulder holders!

The Beach is nothing but a bird bathrooom
Lookout!

Somebody ripped my stick
That guy must be a prick
I asked the cop about it
He said Praise the Lord

Shawn, you need to scan some pics for me.. please!!!!!!! BTW, do you know anything about Gary Fisher Mtn bikes? I found a 14.5" KooHoo-E-Koo w/ Rock Shock in great shape for 50.00... I think its a 93 model bike.. Its like a BMX cruiser w/ gears! LOL
Brad - any time, I have an extra computer set up over here with a pro grade scanner - come spend an afternoon -I work from home.

Also, any of those early '90s Fishers are good frames - even the old Cinenli frames from that era (designed by Gary). Gary was way ahead of the curve on frame design - that would make a good cruiser, but you'll have to use a chain tensioner or short cage derailure as they have vertical dropouts.

So funny you guys mentioned the Surf Punks - the pic of Erik and I on the other page was taken while the Surf Punks was playing in the background - "My beach baby", "The beach is nothing but a birds bathroom".

My boombox was stolen from the St. Paul Civic Center with the Surf Punks tape in the deck - Troy?

Mike, you probably heard of Phil because his frame is the sheeet-FBM's PW Moto! He's not in Lawrence anymore but he comes around once in a while. Mikey Moeller is a fast local bugger who just turned Pro last year. The kid is crazy, jumps all the big stuff at the trails, in clips nonetheless.

The hidden trails are...well...hidden. Super for going big! The locals weren't too happy with me when I rode there. I just couldn't seem to land anything and made work for them.

I'll post my old school pics, more like mid-school as they're from 1986, 1990; post racing and full-time freestyle.

15 and 19 years old. Ahh, the good old days. 1st generation GT Pro Perfomer frame and fork I wish I still had.

Didn't Surf Punks do a song called
"The beach is nothing but a bird bathroom"?

I love that title.
Especially cause I live a mile from the beach.

Oooops!
Little late. Sorry.

Damn, nice air!

Is that the arena in KS City? Looks familiar, raced there at an ABA Nat in '80?
Mike Welsh
That's you getting all that air Steve/bmxbully? Dayum dude! That's awesome ! Wooden ramps and such were just getting into the picture when I got out of bmx in the late 70's. There were some local skate parks in San Diego that we rode on a few times BITD but back then they were all concrete with no wooden ramps. There were big bowls and long culverts and stuff like that. We even used to take our sidehack in them. Man I wish we would have taken pics of that. That was squirlley on a sidehack . Anyway, cool freestyle pic but my fav is that "air pic" of you skying out off that ramp. I used to love skying out like that off dirt jumps but I never had the opportunity to do that off those wooden ramps. That is so awesome and it looks so hairy! Very impressive. You definitely had to have big balls to do that . Talk to you soon Steve and thanks for posting the pics! more more more pics!........
bmxbully
Thanks! That is in Sedalia, MO if I remember correctly. One of the few Central States Freestyle comps that were held Summer of 1990. Very localized, no big players, although Rick Thorne, Leo Chen, and Kurt Schmidt were usually attending.

Two crappy, 8 ft. quarter pipes across the room from each other. What a blast!

What's that!? A shoulder hopper walking up the beach! DUUUUUH.....lol

Don't drop in on me!
Paul Springer
bmxbully,

That 1/4 pipe pic from BITD was MANLY, very impressive, you've got king kong ballz...

Darn, I wish I could find this old bunnyhop pic of me from BITD, I had to be close to 40 inches which is a bunch for a weak T I T like me... I am going to tear apart my basement and look for it...
B. Apold
I think if you raced BMX the Surf Punks were a band that kinda fit the bill...

Anyone need CD's burned let me know. I have everything. Anyone know who Dennis Dragon's brother is??? trivia time... They were ahead of there time weren't they? Anyone ever see Drew Steele and Dennis on the "Peoples Court" ??? Drew had a cloths hanger wrapped around his neck! LOL!!!! harmless fun....

I actually met one of the gutarists for the band in the later version... anway... back to BMX...
Paul Springer
Maybe Captian and Tenille will help people with the answer...?
Ted Carl
Captain and Tenile?

I think Captain and Morgan would be a better choice in finding the answer to that....
Mike Welsh
.....lmao.......you dudes are nuts..... ......

Brad Apold, If you are serious about burning some Surf Punk cds, I would like a copy of everything you got man but I don't want to be a pain in the butt.....but if you really insist on burning me some cds pm me your info bro and i'll shoot you some money for cd's and shipping.....but hey, I don't want to start something here; so it's cool if you don't really want to.......
Shawn Sheely MN-1
To easy Brad, especially with the internet machine:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surf_Punks

I'm drying up on pics, at least any that don't feature me in them. So get your scanners running, I want to see some more 'hood pics.

Locals only.
jerry a hutcher
total time capsule stuff...
Racer
Man that classic Invert 1990 pic is kick ***.
Is that RL , Buff or the infamous BMX Bully?
bmxbully
That invert photo is the only good picture I have from my freestyle days. Whenever my dad took pics at contests they were out of focus or landing, never of the actual trick. I don't even know who took this pic. Anybody heard or seen Jim Nissen? He and I used to battle in the bunnyhop contests. 42" was our max.

I will have to find pics of my racing days. Those are downright funny.
Mike Welsh
....hey bmxbully/Steve...I'm finally beginning to realize that those of us who have ANY pics, at all, of ourselves from BITD are very fortunate. I recently have taken my pictures, and my past, for granted saying, "I wish I had taken pictures of this and that", or, "I wish I had done this and that and not left bmx so early...bla bla bla".....but now I am beginning to realize that anyone of us, whether we got famous from it or not, are fortunate to have been a part of the early days of the sports of bmx and/or freestyle and if we even have one sweet pic we should preserve and cherish it forever(violins please ) AND the really cool thing is that somebody(s) somewhere probably has a pic of you/me/"that-guy-over-there" that we don't even know about and it will probably show up on here some day thanks to all this killer technology we now have .... It's also cool that our great memories can stay alive through each other(vilolins again please ) and the pictures that we share .... if you ask me Steve, I would say that that pic of you, totally launching, getting air off that quarter pipe is YOUR "Holy Grail" pic(for now at least)......that is such a rad shot dude . I wish I had a pic of me doing that(there I go again not appreciating what I have; not to mention I've never launched off a quarter pipe like that)....so anycrap.....you could bunny hop 42" eh?...dayum buddy that's pretty fricking high.....I never measured how high I could bunny hop but I would say probably about 36" is about all I could do.... ........so in closing(tears streaming down my face as the violins play ), if I could give ANY advice, words of wisdom, to all those young "Racing/Freestyling Stallions" out there I would say this, " Take many many pictures of yourself, your friends, and all those around your sport(even if you don't know them), and don't leave your sport before your time is up"...........Elvis has left the building .................
bmxbully
Thanks to all for the complements. I just thought of it as a picture of a kid having fun.

Having a digital camera is the cure to that "wish I had a picture" syndrome. Once you go digital, you snap pics of anything and everything because if you don't like it, delete it. You never have to wait to see what kind of crap develops and pay for all the lens cap misfires. You don't even have to own a computer or printer because you can view and get your stuff printed at the local super-saver for about .20 cents a pic. Shoot away!

Now I have to go look for those racing photos in my mom's attic this weekend.
Paul Springer
Alrighty, my wife finally caved in and went hunting for my old pictures. She wouldn't let me do it because I would have destroyed the basement digging. I am so amped to share these with you guys!

This is bunnyhopping at my grandparents house in Ohio, probably in the 34 inch range (+/-) I am on my white PK with araya 7x's...

This is that old Brooklyn Park track in the woods, I think I was around 13 years old, #2 out front... Riding my GT Pro Model

I think this is a pic from one of the Rondo Classic's at the St. Paul Civic Center. Notice the ramp to ramp jumps set up for Jumpin Jim Pratt going over the ambulance!

This was my last race ever in 1982, it was the NBL Grand National at South Park in Pittsburgh, PA. I think I got 7th in the finals. I am #114 in the white torker jersey, black, white & yellow helmet. Racing my PK

This is the second whoop at South Park NBL Grands on my PK

Keep em coming ladies!

Locals Only, great LP!

Lets all go to Malibu, 27 miles, scenic view....

I like "Letter From Hawaii"...... PS, don't come over here, I wonder why he said that? LOL!

Found a case of Lowe, gee what a score, drank them all in seconds, "got any more"? Just how wasted can I get today?.... Haaaaaa!

I can burn anyone a CD if they want... Acutally there are tons of LPs, CDs and tapes on the ebay... I found a Surf Punks T-shirt....$5 gee what a score...
Shawn Sheely MN-1
Nice pics Paul, that old BP track was fun, really tight.

Hey, I think we should all meet up at one of those indoor go-kart tracks and have a beer - or have a beer and go to one of those indoor go-kart places.

You know what I mean.
Mike Welsh
....awesome pics PaulMN!...you are skying on that bunny hop ..it's about fricking time!....lol.......that dirt track looks awesome...... I wish I was in MN so I could invite myself to go ride go-karts with you guys......or snowmobiles would be really cool!........

Hey MN fellas!
Long time, no post! Busy with home projects, etc.

You guys have to make it to Rockford this year, it's going to be beyond cool. There were quite a few guys from MN there, it was cool to meet everyone. Lots of laughs and hanging out. It's like a time machine.
I am going to put another MN Faction BMX BBQ together this year, it will be cool to see more OS bikes and riders there! We had a good turnout from the freestyle side, but that is only a portion of the MN BMX scene. It'll be promoted a bit more this year, last year was to feel out the scene.

When is the MN faction? Count me in! I have 4 bikes that are finished. Some old, some not so old.

82- GT pro
82-GJS, not finished
89-Torker
92-Robinson
95- GT 24"
Paul Springer
I was looking through the pictures again just for kicks, look closely at how the ramp is supported. It's a wonder any of us are alive... I think we all fabbed up some mickey mousy jumps just to catch air!
mikkopeters
All of these pics are awesome!!!
We held the BBQ in mid Sept last year, we'll have it the same time this year. Here is a link to a post with some pics if you haven't seen them.
We're having a massive game of footdown this year!
Sorry for the post hijack...
B. Apold
Cool! was that in Richfield at the park?

Nice red Torker w/ gold.... great color combo! I see a Skyway too.... There ya go Pauly

Didn't Shawn make that event? I thought he was talking about that before... very cool though

Brad
mikkopeters
It was in Bloomington, 90th and Portland. Right under the big water tower. The city has a skatepark there.
Shawn dropped by the event and we talked a bit about OS BMX in MN, it was cool to meet him. There were a ton of cool bikes there! Next year will be sick. That Skyway is Rick Kasts and the Torker is Jeff Tollefsons. Both VBMXers!
Ted Carl
Here is an old one from Rochester MN. Mark Karsten, Jeff Karsten, Myself, Shawn Sheely, and Brent Saucen (who is now a 6'4" big mean thrill seeker, lol.

Check the bikes!!!! Here is the first (Aforementioned) Cardboard Shrink-wrapped Ashtabula off the wall of the Schwinn dealer! The replacement for it was the one that stayed in the store for 20 years. A Red candy Mongoose, SX-2000, Torker, and an S&S!....

Here is a 1975 shot of my Grandfather teaching me the basics of flatland! Check the accessories on that ride! Generator, Speedo, Lights, lock, and holy garbage can, Batman! Later the brand new 79 SX-2000 learning wheelies and kick turns, and variants of my grandfathers lessons...lol (when was the last time you saw a 55 year old man hop on a grandson's bike and ride it backwards!!!!?? I just noticed I had Vans on in 1975!!!!

This is one open for comment! Anybody remember this dome in Iowa!? What a GREAT venue!!! The surface was 100% rubber Astro-turf underlayment! Rubber ST tires on a Rubber floor! WHHHHEEEEE! Talk about traction! This was a classic sequence of locals. #1, #3, #5 in varying orders! Myself, John Sandberg, and Tim Krone. It appears we MNs cleaned up in Iowa that weekend! With Shawn Sheely carrying #7, I recall someone noting that we were an odd bunch.

We would take turns opening the doors to the dome, and race through the air rushing out of the dome, and get shot through the doorway!.....That was a blast! lol

Super cool pics guys

I just popped some new grips on Maddi & Emma's GT micro/mini and thought I would take a pic of my future racers! Check out Emma's size 12's...
forman
hey is your daughter waerin your vans!!!!!!!
B. Apold
I bet that rubber floor felt nice when riders went down... LOL!
Walter Holda
He Ted, That's a Kick A** pick of your Grandfather!
Shawn Sheely MN-1
Nice pics Ted,

That would have been the fall of 1980, I think we went down the next weekend for the State Championships - I have a pic your dad took from that one too.

Man, that Torker treated me well. Once I got a full size frame I was on a tear.

Never raced that rubber floor place... From John's number, that would have been 1981 or 82.
Shawn Sheely MN-1
Nice pic of the Grandfather too...

In 79 my grandfather suggested I balance against the gate, so I could get going sooner - nobody was doing it at that time. I wrote him off, just didn't make sense at the time.
B. Apold
Shawn is that an EK? I remember when you got that frame. My Cousin had one at the sametime and its actually sitting in a garage in Austin and once I make it down its mine. nice of him huh?
