I've come in to what I think is a Supersport Harrier frame. I want to build it up, but I've got no idea what the original specs were like. Anyone out there got one, or had one, and can let me know what sort of parts I should be looking for? Also - what does the fork look like?
Cher.
AndyDiamond
From memory they had standard Jap components ie. Araya 7X rims, Suze hubs, one-piece cranks.

They also had 'Supersport' branded parts - seat, seat post clamp, grips etc.

Forks were leading edge dropouts from memory.

Thanks for the tip Andy! Do you know if there are any original-ish ones floating around NZ? Are they NZ or OZ made?
AndyDiamond
NZ made.

Supersport had the SE Racing franschise in the early 80s. That's why you often saw the SE guys with Supersport uniforms.

Shepherds Industries.

I called them last year to see if they had any old BMX stuff left - they didn't.

As far as original ones - maybe, in someone's garage.
Most were modified with better parts.

Pretty cool frames - like Torkers (twin top tubes).

I called someone last year who said they had two NOS 20" frames but I can't remember who or where.

I passed on them.

AndyDiamond
No - somewhere else.... I think - lol

Ok, a Supersport Harrier was my first racing cruiser. I can give you a parts breakdown if you want

Frame: Supersport Harrier - Mild Steel - Chrome Plated. Twin top tube

Fork: Supersport Harrier. Leading edge. Mild Steel, chrome plated

Bars: Supersport Harrier. Mild Steel chrome plated. Looked very similar in size and shape to the GT expert bars I have

Stem: ACS Stoker

Grips: Can't remember

Brakes: MX1000 copies, with a DX copy lever

Seat: Shotgun knockoff.

Seatpost: Steel - Chrome

Seatclamp: Alloy (copy of Suntour)

Rims: Araya 7x - Polished

Hubs: Sunshine looseball

Tyres: Cyclepro Snakebelly 24 x 1.75 front and rear (yes! absolutely true!)

Cranks: One piece 175mm steel.

Chainring: Snowflake 42T

Freewheel: Suntour 18T

Chain: 1/8

Pedals: Alloy type (like KKT lightninings)

Those bikes weighed a ton. I bought mine brand new, and put a Uni seat on it, true MX1000 brake and tech 3 lever, Suntour sealed hubs, a Uni Seat, DX pedals, and A'me grips, and a Dia compe hinged seatclamp.

I won both indoor meetings for that year in the 15-17 cruiser class, on that bike. I bought a 1982/83 GT 24 frame/fork and bars for the next season.

I have a photo here of me somewhere racing it at an indoor meeting. I'll see if I can find it

Another thing too.... They were available with chrome with red components, or blue components, or gold components. Mine was chrome with red.

The rims were polished on each colour combo though.
PaulK
Mine was chrome with blue components.. all I've got left is the blue fluted alloy seatpost! Are you sure about the snakebelly tyres? I know Pantha was bring in all the CyclePro stuff; I've got a CyclePro Shotgun II Seat with "Pantha" across the back. I've sure the brakes on mine were Tourney copies - I would have killed for some real MX1000's (I even left the front ones on). The DX copy levers were the worst - they would constantly move from the "High" to the "low" lever setting.

there is a Supersport for sale in NZ right now..

for $80 if you need the link MP me..

Paul,

I'm absolutely certain, as I always thought it was weird, that they had such good tires on such a clunky bike..LOL

I put CompIII's on for the dirt, but I kept the Snakebellies for the indoors.

Mine also came stock with an ACS Stoker stem, another "out of the blue " component. That went on my GT24 as well. Check out the Harrier thread in the Worldwide section. I posted a picture

I know what you mean about the DX copy levers, moving from High to low. Thing is, the genuine DX levers did the same thing after a while. I hated them back then. I couldn't move to Tech 3's fast enough

Thanks again mcam and everyone. These frames are rather chunky (and booger welded to boot), but whenever I look at it, and see pics like the one you posted (thanks again), I get all teary eyed, put one hand on my heart and get an overwhelming desire to sing - G-o-o-o-d defend Newww Ze-e-alaand ;-)
P.S. don't forget the tru-school ride on Waitangi day. Details at www.zombie-flesh-eaters.co.nz. I can't go 'cause I'm out of town. :-<
mcam
Man, I'd go on that ride, but I'm in Christchurch
AndyDiamond
I'm going!
