Full Version: What is your HOLY GRAIL??

A lot of us have re-built our vintage bikes from back in the day - but if price and parts availability were no object, what would you build??

For me it would be a Skyway T/A cruiser with 24" Graphite mags, Vector cruiser bars and 1st gen Profile box cranks. Oakley grips, Dia-Compe brakes, DX pedals and a Kashimax Aero saddle would round out the easier parts to aquire.

What does your vintage ride look like assuming no barriers to getting the parts and building it??

I have it...my 20" Champion, once I had one I never wanted any other bike, to me one of the best mid-70's BMX frames ever made.
QuicksilverBMX
Give me another couple of weeks, and i'll post a pic of it
mcam
I have three bikes I would like to own, and in order of preference, they are:

JMC 24

Patterson PR240

RRS 24

They are my favourite cruisers (after Pre 84 GT's of course )
G-Flash
My WEBCO!
nintendoninja

as for new school bikes, i already got my holy grail :
http://home.arcor.de/supergoose/bmx/125r_01.jpg

why a 125r? because those frames have always been almost $1000 over here. frame only, mind you. yes, that's USD and no, the $1000 are not a typo.
Btpd22
Nomura, & to actually get my old bike back (powerlite pro)
kmart
In no particular order:

JMC Darrel Young
Hutch Tim Judge
I guess I got a thing for Candy Red
Loop tail PK with Graphite Tuffs, Light blue with Camo pads and Gold components

Kmart

FINISHING . . . not likely any time soon.

Martin
bwl007
A Hutch Pro Star, no doubt about it.
JimBetts
Mine would be a replica of my 76 race bike - DG.
AndyT
Schwinn Sting

Not too picky after that - some square taper alloy crank, 7X & high flange hubs or black tuffs, anodized alloy handlebar, swapped in centerpull brake from a road bike.
...and one of those prismatic "mother's worry" stickers like I had on my bike when I was 12
Gerard Angelo
Three come to mind,

my first true BMX bike after my Schwinn SX2000

One: my '79 Kuwahara Z1 - Blue and gold

Second: my '81 GT pro long - chrome

and lastly, I always loved Hutches but never owned one.
Joe P.
Kerry's White Trick Star

ANYTHING Chris Baron built...

Brett K's PR240,or any of his Judge's,or my old XL24...

Tim's chrome OM
Dave Muggleston
The actual CW I owned until it was stolen in 1987.

Or, a similarly-equipped, all NOS replica.

Or, a nice survivor with mostly the same parts.
dreadnought
Any model R&R. I remember BMX Action tested one in one of its first few issues and I thought it was cool looking (I always liked the look of the two top tubes running straight to the drop outs.) Then a new bike shop opened up in my town and they had a few on their sales floor. Didn't have the money at the time to buy one when I was 13 and R&R didn't last long on the market.

Nice to see that 'Holy Grails' differ from person to person. And it is nice to see people thinking for themselves on the subject, instead of hearing "My holy grail is a Looptail quadangle with Aerospeeds, a tuff neck, son-lite hubs, basically anything that brings huge auction prices". I thought I would be the only one that claims a 'common' bike as a holy grail! I have both of my dream bikes right now:
1) 1984 Schwinn Predator (childhood bike)
2) 24" skunk quad with 1" headtube and american BB
malp
Ozone or Quad Freestyle
HurricaneHenry
In the process of buiding it but I'm afraid a few of the parts and pieces will never be found again:

JMC 3.1 XL f/f (Have it)
Race Inc. 4" bars (Need it)
Seguino GT cranks (Have it)
Titron Pedals (Alan has all of them)
Bear Development Ti BB (Yeah, right! Have you seen one???)
Bear Develop/King Ti Headset (There is still hope!)
Grab-on Grips (Got 2 pair)
Haro Lightning Plate (still dreaming)
Son-Lite Hubs (Just as soon as I hit the lottery)
Moosegoose Nick

Here is mine. The only thing it is missing is a set of Decals and a set of gold DX pedals.
66alfa_gtv
My Cook Bros is pretty close to the holy grail I wanted back in the late 70s. A loop-tail quad would be up there too.
MikeStevens
My grail is an 84' GT Cruiser. Built as a cruiser replica of the 20" that I had as a kid. I have been searching for that one a while now.

If I keep building bikes then the list goes:
JMC Cruiser
Patterson PR240
OM Flyer
26" Skunk Quad
akcuda
I pretty much already have 'em except for one: VDC Changa long

For me it would have to be a Cook Bro's. The first time I ever walked into a real bike shop that was the first bike I saw. Tried to convince my dad to buy that instead of the GT that I ended up getting. I guess there is something about first impressions.
Roc
one (1) lousy set of Red Speedo pads, to finish off a build that's been 4 years in the making.....one lousy stinkin' set...just one!!! $50- finders fee that lands me the one lousy set of pads......
SoCalDesertRider
There are a few of us Cook Bros nuts here I see....
When I was a kid, Cook Bros was the pinnacle of BMX bikes, in my mind .

I just about have my 'holy grail' of BMX already-

It's a '78 Cook Bros nickel looptail f/f that I'm building up now with some parts the same as my old original '76 Cook Bros, and some parts better than what I had on that one, now that I have a little more money to spend on it than I did when I was a kid .

If money were no object, I think I'd have one Cook Bros bike from each style of 20" frame they made, all built a little differently, one with all Cook Bros parts, one with a Uni-Clamp stem and fork, and one with an upper/lower tripple clamp fork.

To really top the whole 'holy grail' thing off, one of the bikes would have to be my actual '76 Cook Bros I built as a kid that was stolen many years ago. I still keep an eye out for it, even though it's been over 15 years since it was stolen and I live 500 miles away from where it disappeared....
rumblerdave
For me, it would be my original candy blue National Pro XL, or a replica of it. Unfortunately all I have is this 20 year old picture... Anybody know where this bike is?
Last seen in Longwood, Fl about 15 years ago.
Zakkfan67
82 red PK(had one bitd),82 chrome GT Pro,Hutch XL 24,84?? chrome Trick Star(had one bitd),a Mike Buff replica blue & white PK-the Taco Bell bike,or a chrome Supergoose. And an nos set of 180mm Aerospeeds.Oh,and Woody's gold Trick Star.......
Nighthawk
My holy grail is a Patterson long, with graphite tuffs, put together exactly like Richie Anderson raced. I wasn't really a fan of his, I rode Redline all my life; but that is the one bike that just looks sooooo sleek and fast.

There's one that came from ebay that's hanging up in a TGIF now, my wallet wasn't as deep as a corporation's.
sanjosebmx
Looptail PK or Mini Ripper like I raced in the way back machine
jjcmack
26 inch Santa Ana GT. Anyone know where I can find one?
Ted Carl
My holy grail is my original Sting that was stolen!

Not a copy, but the real deal.

Someday, ....I will find it!
Matt S.
Late 80's dark blue or black S&M Dirtbike frame and fork.

Not as picky as I once was. I "found" a few that I would have considered my holy grails, only to sell them for one reason or another. If I found an early Floval Flyer, 24" RRS, 24" Profile, 24" Robinson, 24" Patterson or 24" CW Phaze1 I'd be happier then a pig in mud. So, if there are any of you out there with one of these bikes and you're feeling generous, my address is...........
