Full Version: 1" headset question

Hello, I thought that all 1" headsets were the same? I bought a 1" Tioga Beartrap headset thinking it would fit an old school bike, but the cups were too small. It wasn't an oldschool Tioga headset, but rather a newly manufactured set. Another question: I sold my 80's Schwinn Predator 16" pit and the new owners said they could not find a headset for it. They said that they were told that it was the wrong fork for it (matching set from 1984, and I never had a problem with finding a headset) & They said it required a 1 1/4" fork and that the fork was wrong. I have had the set for many years and know it is original. What size headset does it take? I have a box full of old headset parts and dig through it until I put together a complete set, so I am still unaware of a difference in 1" sizing. Help?

uhhhhhh?? I'm sure you are correct. 1" threaded was all i've ever known of and I use those same new Tioga headsets on all my oldschool builds. I've had issues more than once where the head tube was worn and the cup would fall right in and out instead of a pressed fit but thats not that uncommon. As far as the 16" bike. I think that guy might be on crack

I bought a headset (new) for a bike I built and the whole thing was fine except the bottom cup. It was way too small. The rest of the parts fitted perfectly but the fit of the bottom cup was way off. I think some of the cheap copies may have missed quality control.

i has the same porblem at 2 different local bike shops. one ordered a set that was too small and the other was too big.... so i am using a frankenstein headset made from a bunch of used parts. got a headset lock recently so it should last a while.

Somebody posted on this in the last couple of months. Basically 1" threaded JIS vs 1" threaded ISO. Then, to compound matters, bottom cups for non threaded sets are larger too. biketoolsetc.com catalog has chart on p130. maybe online too. I believe Chris King does too. Then, you can throw into the mess, new overseas junk that may not match anything, but your dealing old school so...rotsa ruck..Al

I cant seem to find the thread that was posted on this before. But what I found out was that even though headsets may say 1" on them, the size can very greatly. The only way to make sure it fits, is to measure the frame and the cups with a micrometer. And match the headset to the frame.

I found this out the hard way buy using a NOS Beartrap that was slightly too large and it cracked the chrome on the frame.

old school BMX threaded 1" is different from road/mtb threaded 1". most of the currently made 1" headsets are road/mtb size, since BMX no longer uses 1", for the most part (tioga makes beartraps in both sizes). the fork is the same, but cup size fit to the frame differs...

1" road/mtb cups = 30.2mm

1" BMX cups = 32.7mm

(just for comparison, new school 1 1/8" cups = 34mm)
