Is there any difference between a 70 and a 76? Which came first the 70?
TIM
70 came 1st, then 76... though the number does NOT signify the year of introduction.

70s have two brake pads; 76s have 4... or some such thing. sodbuster was just explaining this the other day in his laboratory.

The book I am looking at shows quite a bit of difference. All three of the bearings are the same. The 70 uses 2 brake shoes and the 76 uses 4. The sprockets are the same as are the axle and nuts. The brake arms are different, and the hubs. The 70 was produced from 2/69to 6/76. Hope this helps

That’s right I was. Wasn’t I. when assembling the "76" model pay attention to the placement of the four brake shoes. They slip in one at a time but work in pairs. Each shoe has a finished (smooth) edge and an unfinished (rough) edge. The finished edges must be up against each other. And they CAN be installed wrong. If you install them rough edge to rough edge or rough edge to a smooth edge you will have problems with the bearing adjustment. Also the hub may grab while trying to coast and the braking action may be poor.

This is your helpful hint of the day brought to you by the good folks and evil genuses at Sodbuster Labs. At Sodbuster Labs we are working harder…. To get you into more trouble

Sod thanks for the info. I just pulled my first one apart the other day for a rebuild.
I test fitted it back together w/no grease just to see how it all worked and I didn't even notice the differences in the pads. At least I didn't grease it all up yet. Now I gotta go check it...Thanks..

Looking for a high flange Bendix(black) like the kind that came on Schwinn Scramblers and other bikes, I think the were 76's, just a shell would do. Will 70 parts fit in a 76 hub and vice-a-versa?

i have a few bendix let me know if you need them
spike
Any chance ya have one like the one I'm looking for? It's not like normal Bendix hubs the flange is higher, about the same size a front high flange.

Thanks again for all the info!

Spike I don't have any of the high flange type hubs but I am always on the lookout for them. if I ever find any I'll let you know. as far as interchanging of the guts between a "70" and "76" model? I do not see why you could not pull that off. the bearings are the same. though I have never tried it myself.

Sod,

Amazing the things you pick up around here. I've been building/rebuilding these hubs since I took my training wheels off, and never knew about the difference in the shoe surfaces, nor have any of the great bike mechanics I've worked with in 30 years in the bike business ever pointed this out. Pretty cool stuff.
