Hello,
I just acquired this frame, from a fellow who got it from one of the largest Redline dealers in the Southeast in the 1977-78 era. I know this dealer, as I raced on their home track, and sucked wind while riding my homemade Stingray BMX to a constant mid-pack finish.
Anyway, this frame was allegedly a prototype, with an alternative brace, and round stays. The story also says that the Team Guys didn't like it, and it was thrown in the back room. When the store closed, the frame was given away. Its been in a barn for probably 23-24 years, and unfortunately, the plating is pretty shot. Hand stamped serial number 835. Is it worthy of a restoration, or just junk?

I may be wrong, but I don't think that's a Redline at all... Looks like an early MCS, Z-1 maybe?

Ask Rod Miles!

rumblerdave, I think you're right on it !!

By the way, an MCS Z-1 is way rarer than just about any early Redline I can think of. Just as cool in my book too! Neat frame.

Sticker sets for old MCS frames seem to be non-existant. I've got 2 early frames that need decals, I've been looking for years with no luck.

Thanks for all of the info. I remember this dealer as being pretty innovative- I would not be surprised if he wasn't considering the MCS line to sell at his shop, and had the local hotshots try it out!
I guess I'm still on my quest for an early Redline. I have a replica of my 1977 era BMX bike, Stingray frame, Morris Wheels, Redline fork. I want to build the bike that my folks couldnt afford back then.
I'm certain that I will be a regular here, as I continue the search!

I owned a Z-1 and it had that gusset tube. My Z1 had a regular head tube. If thats a 5" head tube it may be some funky Redline Prototype made by MCS.
But then again your being down south and MCS having factory guys in Georgia and Florida back then Im thinking it is a Z-1
Greg Esser would know for sure.
He goes by gesser here in Vintage I think.
