Someone just gave a me an older style Mongoose frame. It is the one after the candy team goose. Rear dropouts kinda looks like a step jump with 2 holes above the axle slot. What years were these and how can you tell if it is the full chromo or half mild steel?

get the serial number from BB and post it up
and some need pics too
another simple check is the brake bridge, i believe
if it has 1 hole for caliper then its a tri moly - if it has the caliper hole and two others either side it will be a full chromoly frame.

super goose drop outs???
I think some people are under the impression that the 2nd style of dropouts (the kind with 2 holes) means it is a Supergoose. That has nothing to do with it. The second style of dropouts came out in 1982 (or close to it) and were to create more bottom bracket clearance. Mongoose made both tri-moly and full chomemoly frames with these dropouts.
KDW 712 is correct that if it's full chromemoly, there should be 3 holes in the rear brake bridge (2nd style dropouts only). It should also have the flattened rear chain stay (at least mine does). Hope this helps.

First digit is the month, second is the year.

Sorry for not getting it, but I don't see it.
# I 167711
First digit is 1= jan???
second digit is 67???? Can't be the year.

I equals the 9th number, or sept. A would be jan, B would be feb.. and so on. Next # is a 1, so thats 81. See, I=9, the ninth month, 1 equalls 81, as it cant be 71 or 91. Now, to see if its a chro-mo super goose, on the rear chain stays (picture where the chain is running near the freewheel inside the frame rail, is there a small (@ 2 inch) flat spot? In other words, does the round tubing pinch its self off? Thats a Super if it does. Lastly, at the neck, where the big gusset is, look inside for hints of old blue or red paint, then it may be a team. I belive, at the top of this website, the 81 mongoose catalog is available for viewing.

I think the flat spot by the chainstay was incorporated into all models by 1980. Also, I think that by `81 the Supergeese had a three-hole rear brake bridge, but I'm not 100 % sure on that one.

Then how can you tell if an '80 goose is a 'super'?
Motor City Mongoose

In `80 the Supergoose and Team models still had a "T" as the first digit of the serial number, and the serial number would have still been the "old" style with three sections: the "T", the date, then the consecutive unit number. Both Supergoose and Team frames would have been built the same with all tubes chromoly, but the Team would have been epoxy coated (`80's version of powder coating) over the chrome. If the frame was from 1980 and it doesn't start with a T, it's just a regular `goose. I don't know if 1981 followed this exact theory or not. Randy is a better expert than myself on these, and I'm sure he can tell you anything I may have incorrectly stated, as well as what went on in 1981.
