Over at brokenspokes.net we've been doing a lot of NJ freestyle Bios of O.S. riders. Basically because my friend knows a lot of the hot freestyle guys from BITD.
I'm hoping by starting with Brad, I'm able to pull in more of the O.S. racers from NJ. I personally raced from 79 to 84 from Bergen to Vineland and hope to eventually have tons of Bios of the MANY great NJ racers from that era.
Without further adieu I'd like to give ya Brad Dalbec, 80's Thruster Factory Ace and all around good guy. He's the first racer on my site to be Bio'd and I hope I did him right.
This ones for you Brad!

Thanks to everyone... and thanks for giving me the opportunity for the interview Brett, it was really fun reminiscing on those great times.
Glad to see Lopez is game, we talked for hours and he’s got some great stories... It should be interesting. He was one of the toughest competitors in our class BITD and one of the nicest guys as well.

I will get some pics togther for you in the next couple days Brett. I can put you in touch with Jarrett Justice, Franco Perrino, and Kathy Shackel if you would like for future interviews. Another old school Jersey guy you may want to consider is Mike Lynch (ex-factory SE, Vector, Cyclecraft). He posts here as well.

Didn't Kathy have an older brother as well?
I was thinking of PMing Mike...I wish I could find Steve Malaguti...

Kathy had an older brother John. He was a B Pro.
I've got a pic or two of Charlie also.

Kathy's brother John rode for Shimano BITD and went on to work at SMB (Steve's Moped and Bicycle World) in Dumont NJ. He ran their BMX team there also. I rode for him for a year or two and was friendly with Kathy, and would love to see an update on them.
Brad, you are the man!

Brad, great interview, enjoyed reading it. Your one of NJ's legends. Brett, great idea! If I can help out let me know. Everytime I read this site another great NJ riders name appears. It is amazing how many great NJ riders we have had. We kept the west coast boys honest, and they know it.Anyone up for organizing a reunion? How awesome would that be?
Brett Middaugh
Dec 29 2005, 05:30 PM
No way...Mike! Excellent!..
I'll get to work on your bio too...all the old school stuff you can dig up would be killer as well....

I can definately get a place to do a re-union between my bud George Hoernig and Incline Club, we can do something...The freestyle guys keep having get-togethers....but I'm thinking the race crew is more about throwing down some crazy old stories rather than the crazy old bikes..

Dec 29 2005, 10:58 PM
I never got to meet Brad (bitd) but Im sure I woulda like him then as he's totally cool now.
Factory riders I remember seeing from NJ back in the late 70's early 80's ( I left the East Coast in 81)
Sal Zeuener (MCS then Thruster then DG)
Terry Zeuner (SE)
Jenny Zeuner (DG) - VBMX active
Mike Lynch (SE) - VBMX active
Mikey Mayes (SE)
Chriss Williams (Thruster)
Franco Perrino (Thruster)
John Shachel (Shimano)
Kathy Shachel (Shimano)
Charlie Litsky (Mongoose)
Sal Echel (Patterson)
Frankie Something Polish (Panda)
John V? Something (Puch)
Amon Emeka (Jag)
Russ Peterson (Thruster)
Rich Farside (Hutch)
Lynch was never fast, just all the girls liked him. Im not sure if Sal Echel was factory as I didnt know him, but he looked dialed, one of the reasons I bought a Patterson. But the bike sucked (Nickle one too dam wish I still had it) and traded it to someone at newbridge rd park i think for a black quadangle. (Best 20' ever).

Kathy Shackle rode for GHP also in the mid 80's when she went pro.
How about Dave "Spanky" Campbell. Hyper (I think) and TNT Factory.
Find Jose Nieves and finally figure out how old he was when he raced 13x. Although he may have died of old age by now.
I now he is not from NJ but Ken Aman. You could do a Tri-state area thing....

Very nice interview !! About 3 1/2 years ago I started coming to this site and seeing Brad's posts is one of the reasons I kept coming back. I loved seeing all the photos and video Brad has posted here over the years.
Thank you for sharing Brad, you really are 1st class !!

I'm not real good handling compliments, but once again thanks to everyone for their comments.
quote:
You could do a Tri-state area thing....
That's an idea... Ken Aman, Jud Ciancio and Tim Gabriel all held nat #1 at one point and were our NY neighbors who raced in our backyard all the time.
Lots of other great NJ racers as well as mentioned earlier.
Brett Middaugh
Dec 30 2005, 12:26 PM
In response to doing the Tri-State thing, I'd love to do all the great NE guys and put them all over my site, but I'm really just trying to stick with NJ, because I really wanna just focus on my old home state...Actually, this may seem egotistical, but I was hoping by doing what I was doing, maybe some other guys would get a little inspired and start doing the same for their home states. I think it'd be real cool to have a NY page, PA page, FLA page, etc...I just can't do 'em all, lol!
I do wanna thank all the guys who have volunteered to give me Bios and are sending me photos and what not, bear with me, I'll have all the stuff up and posted there in time.
Rock on, Brett

Brett,
Understand, you are doing a great job, keep it up! I mean BOOOOOOOO, NY rules!!! I can forward you Mark Zalewski's (CEO of TNT) email if you don't have it. Would be cool to see TNT get some more props..
Mazway, that makes sense most people's temperment mellows with age. Jose was one mature 13 year old. I'm sure he is just kicking back living off his pension now....

Dec 30 2005, 04:34 PM
Ouch! Damn Racer you could at least make me feel good by saying that I was fast some of the time. But the chicks comment, I liked that.
How about some of these old NJ names: Joe Urban, Joe Layton and Clay Goldsmid. I'm slow, but others will come to me.
Where is Jen Zuener? She has a wealth of info. Anyone hear from Farside lately? Have not seen any posts from him lately.
Brett Middaugh
Dec 30 2005, 06:07 PM
Love to have have Mark's email..TNT was the team back in the mid school time!....
Mike I think Clay has his son racing..check some of the results from the State Championship this year...
I talked to Farside in the Fall and he is down for anything to help the kids and BMX. I'm gonna try and do a real cool interview with him and his daughter soon...
You guys will be getting your email interviews over the weekend...

Brett,
I have Mark's email on my work computer. I will send it to you on Wed.
I went to spectate at the NBL Pres cup and X mas classic the other day. It was great to be back at the track and it gave my 9 month old daugher her first exposure..and she didn't cry. A good start!!! Unfortunatly got to witness AA pro Brandon Meadows wreck in a semi (see thread in new school area) Got the itch to race again for sure. What a great sport!!! The Pro section was pretty crazy (By old school standards at least) may have to pull the Cruiser out of the attic to get ready for spring....time to start practicing manuals

Hey I own a diner/deli if all the old schools guys want to come on down I will buy the Taylor ham egg and cheeses.
And seems how kmart is the only guy around my age here,If he makes a comeback I will too,but when I crash and burn he has to make my mortgage payment(L.o.L),but then again maybe Jose has enough in his retirement, to take care of it.

Dec 31 2005, 09:38 AM
Sweet...
Ohio doesn't have any deli's or good diners for that matter. I'm in! I have short term disability should be no problem.....
If you want to come out to my neck of the woods I'll leave an open invite for the Christmas Classic in Columbus next year for any Old School NJ/Ny folks that want to make a comback....Gives you a year to practice.....and I know I will need it.

Mike
I have been doing the old weights, rollers, and sprints thing again.
I have decided to try this Factory thing one more time. Since I have been tacking my daughter to the races and playing around myself I have decided to give it a shot this year. With the help from Hyper I have started a very strong state team that will be hitting all of the NJ state races this year. I have also made a commitment to ride of the Factory Hyper team for 06. I really want to take a shot at a National and World title this year to see if I can do it one more time.
This 35-39 class is getting harder and harder. This past weekend in Ohio we had 1/4s.
If you are around port this winter you might see me on my MX bike.

Rich,
I got a chance to see some of the "old man" classes last week. It is funny seeing how competitive they are and how good everyone is relative to BITD. I remember the 35 and over crusier class in the mid 80's....not so exciting...I think I'll be giving the 35-39 cruiser class a go locally this year and see how what happens...maybe go get destroyed at the Xmas classic..

The 35-39 class is only going to get harder. With some of the old school guys coming back and there is talk of 2 pro’s going to reclass down this will be one of the hardest cruiser classes out there.

Jan 1 2006, 07:28 PM
Well crap........
Maybe I'll go 20" and start in Int again....it might be tough to go back to a 20" after all the montain biking the cruiser seems like a better home.
Thanks for the encouragement!!!!! (LOL)
