The Stu pick that Evan posted is my all time favorite pic of Stu!
It was taken after an NBA national in Bakersfield, 1976; that was our sky jump. There were about 10-15 of us hitting that jump hard that day, two photos (this one and another one of Robbie Lee) made issues of BMXA; I’m on the hill in the background. I can’t remember if it was Oz or Windy on the hill taking those shots but I know I’d love to see all the proofs from that day. The landings were knarly!; there was a downed barbed-wire fence about 15’ from the takeoff.

Here are a few classic's.
Bill Madden, 1988.
This is one of the first, if not the first tabletop I saw in a mag bitd & just thought this guy was awesome. BMX Plus! from around 79-80'ish.
Can anybody I.D. this guy. I think it was from a NorCal national.

And tell all them young whipper snappers that there was no backside to land smoothly on. Big air to flat ground, it was a talent to be able to land smoothly, Stu was awesome at that.

The pride of the east coast showing it on the west coast. Hollywood Mike Miranda, BMXA 10/85. It doesn't get much bigger than this. Old, mid or new school.

Hey BND, I got to witness that one in person.1979 Mongoose Grand Nats below the devoshire downs bleachers. He did that during a race and landed it, barely. 1100 riders or entrys, I got to stay with Jim Melton for a week and hang with Leary and Jarboe.

That pic of the king is from the infamous honda hill, located in south san diego, from the pic you can see he is up there, what you don't see is the lip of that jump is 4 ft. down and 6 ft. back in that ravine, it took huge huevos to ride there.
Unfortunatly it was one of many popular riding areas that were destroyed due to urban sprawl, there are alot of san diego old schoolers with some of there best memories at honda hill. Darrin

The pic bnd posted (parting shot) is San Diego's own Rick Chastain and he did this DURING a moto at the Grandnationals at Devonshire Downs in '79. He didnt even lose a position! THAT is the definition of "pancake"! I think I gave up trying to do them after witnessing that one.

Hahahaha! Mendenhall you beat me!
The tabletop is of Rick Chastain of Chula Vista, (South San Diego) Ca.
Taken at the 1979 NBA Mongoose Grandnationals during a moto. The whole crowd let out a huge, loud gasp when he did it. No one expected it except for John Ker I would guess. I was about 20 feet behind Ker when it was shot.
Rick Chastain was years ahead for style, technique, grace, smoothness, and being able to tabetop SICKENLY effortless. Definately a San Diego legend. Quit racing after 1980.

Eddy King (in the Hot Shots pic posted) was from Chula Vista too, just like Rick Chastain.
What Eddy is doing is way gnalier than that picture can show you. Here's why............
That jump Eddy's on is in Chula Vista near a concert venue called the Coors Amphitheater. It was called a few things... Honda Hills (not to confused with Honda "Hill" in L.A.), Scorpion, and Scorpio. The jump was a ravine.
It was REALLY GNARLY! Like going as fast as you can for about 3/4 of a block, then dropping into an over two story dirt half pipe (no vert though) but the bottom being about 20 feet of flat. Going around at the slowest 35 mph.
Then you have to pedal up about almost two stories to this step jump thats (like Darrin Vinvent said) 5' high to clear and about 10'- 12' feet from the tip of the lip to the tip of the landing.
Eddy's probably going over 40 mph, is about 13' high from the lip. Probably landed about 35' from the lip. It was a flat landing.
Rumor from Deane Hamilton (47 year old cruiser class winner of the ABA Worlds n Ontario) of San Diego is.... it's still there! Rumor though....
I have a pic of Sadano Porciuncula from a angle that you can see how deep the revine is. I'll try to post it tomarrow.

Jason, you are correct!
The pic of Stu that Evan posted - You can see the downhill run at the jump in the background. The jump itself was 15 to 20 feet totally verticle, it would shoot you straight up, very high! The landing was totally flat!

That`s the stuff that defined the "legends" of OUR time. Big air took big balls. Not to take anything away from jamie bestwick or Dave Mirra, but the old school jumpers had the biggest nuts. Big air is what lured me away from organized racing when track officials started squacking about `certain people` jumping big in motos...

Anyone have that picture of Woody Itson from an issue of BMXA where he was jumping out of a bowl onto flat ground? SICK air. This was before Woody was even known. 1982ish??

This is the same jump Eddy King's hitting
in the Hot Shots photo posted on this thread.
It's called a few things.... Honda Hills, Scorpio, and/ or Scorpion in Chula Vista, Ca.
This rider is the first rider for Wheels N' Things
Bike Shop, Sadano Porciuncula.
Taken in 1976.
You can really see how deep the ravine is here.
Looks like he's either doin an ariel or
he's crossing over and dropping down the jump backwards.

Realize that what looks like the lip is actually the beginning of the landing area. The lip is below about 5' and back another 10'.

Wow nice posts! The one with Woody was at the Orange Skatepark down the street from the YMCA Track (Its since been filled in). Definately one of the best skatepark photos ever. BTW I knew Woody back in the day. What some of you guys may not realize is before Woody, Martin and Eddie became famous they were just Orange Y locals, racing more than doing tricks.
Does anyone have one of my favorite shots. It was of John Crews I think he was on Redline (or Patterson) and he was getting huge air at a stadium race. I think it was in BMXA but I just cant remember and all my mags from BITD were stolen a few years ago.

Darrin,
The picture Steef posted of me was taken after the races at the 1981 Diamond Back Summernationals.
That guy on the left was my good friend Dwight Jones. Tall, super nice, black guy from Mission Hills. He was around 18. I was 13. By the way, saw Mike Williams racing two weeks ago.

JMC 1969,
Those pictures of Darrell Young ROCK! Did you take those? Where was that? Who's the other photographer on the ground?

A couple of outstanding BMXA photo's that were on my old skool books....

Clearing the Sydney Opera House counts as big air , yes ?
Anyonne else have photo's that sort of show themselves jumping over unusually large global landmarks ?
The skatepark pix are awesome , I could never manage to get that sort of height at our local parks here tho.
I would always give it a try tho

There was a shot BMXA ran in '88 or '89 of Moeller launching off a berm at the Orange Y track. Dunno if anyone remembers that, but it was pretty big air. It also influenced me to try the same thing at the local track.....it cost me a set of bars and pedals, but it was worth it.

It looks like Coast VL & I were always jumping over "houses" bitd...
That jump out the front of my old house rocked , it was sort of like a single lane 6ft high 1/4 pipe .You could hit it with as much speed as possible & it would literally throw you into the sky , the picture was taken from higher ground than the jump's lip so adding another 6 ft of air under you would not be BS , if I can find the other dozen or so of these pix taken in this session , I'll post them up....
