Come on I know there's more out there....
Mike Corvin
That's what I was thinkin' coastvl- How high were you? Looks like you're jumping a house!!
Johnny - that Honda Hills shot is incredible. That is just vintage radness. The grainy quality makes it that much cooler.
Could that be the first nac-nac in bmx history?
Walter
go back everyone to the first page..........
dont get me wrong eddy was great but bitd things had alot to do with photography. eddy appears to be really sailing. however, the kids are sitting there with heads at normal stance. this means eddy is at eye level (probaly 5-6 feet).

with OZ laying on his back and shooting upwards it looks as if hes 15 feet up. props to oz for capturing our imaginations and for taking great shots...........
Randy
why do you see the ground if Bob's on his back shooting up?

looks like Eddy's a good 8-9 feet up to me. smoke & mirrors? bah.
Florida Vaughn
We need more BIG air posts....not gabbin posts...

Matt seems to be jumping even higher in this pic , Coast VL is obscured by his rear tuff & thats me all the way down at street level in the Skyway Jersey.
That odd look on Matts face is due to our encouragement & the options that awaited him if he didn't get the jump nailed that afternoon

Go Rohan! Cool pic. Loved that jump.

Sometimes you Kick

Sometimes you get Kicked

Skatepark air got real ugly sometimes...
Using dirt jumps to clear the photographer felt safer & let you ride the next day (usually) eating dirt was more preferable than eating concrete.

No thread about "big air" would be complete in my book without this pic. To me it's still the ultimate! Sometimes it's not the quantity it's the quality.

Randy M is famous again. We were talking about that very jump at our vintage gathering at Dixieland last year. It's still next to Percy Priest lake. I wish Friday would post the rest of that article. We talket about having a lake jumping contest this year, but we moved the date back a couple of months. So the lake might be too cold

Here is an old one of mine. This is at some high school in NJ that we went to after one of the Flemington state races. There was a lower parking lot that ended into a steep up hill area, then a grass area above it to a basketball court. My buddy bet me I couldn't clear the 15 feet of grass and land on the court. Full speed and I hit it. This is towards the landing. Kind of hard to get an idea of how high the jump was.

1.5 rim GT Superlace wheels and they held up fine.

I also have a picture I have been trying to find from out by the old local track. I was out jumping and a news guy snapped a picture. It ended up on the front page on the following Mondays edition. I was ducking to keep from ripping my head off on the tree branches in the picture. We just moved so hopefully I can unbury that one.

One clarification for Johnny J - The Honda Hills the Eddy was at, that was always in BMXA, was not in San Diego. It was in OC - Diamond Bar, I think.
MoshB
North Hampton Ma. indoor '84? might not look like big air but.. My mom paid the track photographer to take a pic so I wanted it to look good, come up to this table to fast get decent air & overshoot the landing by about 10'. Wrecked in a ball of flames.

Infamous,
I'm positive that the pics of Eddy in BMX Action are from Chula Vista. There was Honda Hill and then there was Honda Hills (plural). One was in Chula Vista and the other one in Orange County (or L.A.). I rode the one in Chula Vista a lot. Never rode the other.

Read what Darrin Vincent and I posted about it on page 2 of this thread.

Look at the pics I posted of Sadano on page 3 of this thread.
It's the same jump Eddy's on in BMX Action. The one in Chula Vista. Just from a different angle. I'm positive.

Here are a couple photos I found from the early-mid 90's. I'm already washed up as far as jumping goes. I had outgrown my 20's and I'm jumping a 24" Revcore in these pics. I was at my best in the early to mid 80's when I had my original Champion with Bottema forks. I wish I had pics from then. We never really thought about it. We just rode. This place was called "disappearance". First pic shows heading into the jump. If you watched from this angle, you guessed it... you disappeared into the bowl. The next shot shows the jump from the bowl.
The other was just a small speed jump where we would jump for distance and try to do some tables and such. It was just a flat landing so it was perfect for high speed airs.

not exactly the giant air you guys are posting.. but these trail in louisville, Ky are were i really learned to jump.... all of the jumps here came up out of ditches that we built lips onto... jumped up and out.. 10-15 feet each way.. up and out to flat land....

this is my favorite pic of me..
also the only good one cause my friends couldnt take pics either!

The thing about pics like this when I was a kid, was that I really thought the pros went everywhere in leathers -- the track, school, Burger King -- everywhere! lol I mean, here were some dudes in regular clothes just hanging out getting rad, when all of a sudden Eddy fricken King pops out with air he needed FAA clearance for in full kit! When I finally got my Haro leathers, I finally convinced my mom to let me wear them to school occasionally.

How 'bout this one of DY flying over Doug Bailey at Gabriel Park in Portland, Oregon. I believe this photo was taken by Doug's brother Steve.

The Honda Hill you refer to, was it off of Palm Avenue or was it at the end of Orange at Brandywine?
I grew up in Chula Vista (circa mid-80's), actually still do (Eastlake now) and all those spots were notorious for big air.
If you have any details on where it was at I can stop by and check. The development wiped out most of Palm, but there still is a spot off of Orange that could be the ravine you are refering to. I remember to be the same location, but that was 20 years ago. Were there any other names you remember it by?
Thanks for bringing back some cool memories.
Sam

Yeah, Orange Ave near Brandywine (near Coors Aphetheater).
That's the location.

Not the end of Palm Ave.
That place was more for motorcycles.

Wow that is amazing, and I'm still thinking 20+ years later, that landing has to be ....ummmm....firm...

That's way more air than the guy that gets shot out of the cannon at the circus.
Cool-Tool Nat.#1
I pedaled down the first straight at Cool-Tool, then launched straight off the first berm for this photog, didn't even know where he was! 15ft. to flat: notice how I use my foot to prevent the bars from getting stuck 'cause of the front brake !
STODD
Johnny, Rielley or anyone that used to venture into Fountain Valley...
Did any of you guys hit the Santa Ana river trail with any of the locals bitd? That was our spot(the HB pier also) where we'd jump the grates to flat(about 15 feet, sometimes more depending on how fast you could get).

If ANYONE has pics of ANYONE jumping there, I'd love to see them.

The wall jump at the FV Boy's Club was pretty cool too.
STODD
Anyone?

JMC 1969,
Those pictures of Darrell Young ROCK! Did you take those? Where was that? Who's the other photographer on the ground?

Yo Johhny J,

Those pix JMC 1969 posted are from the ABA DY photo shoot. I have the complete folder with all those shots. They wrere shot in Chandler, AZ. Some at the track, and some at a local park. Denny Griffiths and Brad Fanshaw shot all those photos. The photo form the famous JMC DY frame ad came out of that photo shoot. JMC 1969 most of got those shots from JIm Melton's site. I sent the complete folder to Rick from VBMX who built the site for Jim. There are some really killer shots, some of DY skateboading, golfing with JMC uni on, and lot's of other cool stuff.

BTW, the photographer laying on the ground is Brad Fanshaw.
