Hi, I am Lucas. Iam Michelle's husband. I am actually the one buying all the bikes. I am a bike collector and raced bmx for a few years. I love buying all of these old bikes. I think it would be cool to sell your bike and know that is not going to be ridden by anyone, but up on a wall to be admired by thousands of people for years to come. If any of you have any good ideas on how to hang them please feel free to let me know I have tried to get the people who hang them to not drill through the bikes but I suppose some still are. If anyone has any good ideas on how to hang them and still being safe and secure, without being able to pull it right off the wall I would be happy to include it with the bike when I send it to the store.

You and your wife appear to be class acts. I'd like to personally thank you for displaying such cool things like these old bikes. I will certainly be supporting the local TGIF from now on.

Thank you Ken, I really enjoy buying these old bikes and cleaning them up fixing some of them ect. I wish I had time to ride some of them. I have tried to figure out ways to tell the installers how to hang them, but unfortunatly people try to pull on them or steal stuff off of them. I don't buy all of the bikes on ebay, and I buy alot of the bikes for very cheap and make them look good so the prices on the bikes evens out quit a bit. I think more people know about these bikes than some of you think, I think most people enjoy seeing somthing cool like that they had when they were younger. I know all of these vintage bmx bikes and enjoy them as much as you all do.

Welcome aboard!
Can you answer a couple of questions?
Does Friday's submit a max budget to Michelle to spend on one item such as a bicycle? Do you know how many you are required to buy or do you just buy them as something appealing comes up?
Thanks.

lucas,
A GT in the marlton, nj restaurant has steel cables looped around the top tube, the pedal against the wall was removed and they put a screw through the pedal hole in the crank arm. This looked like a pretty humane way to do it. But I guess I could have pulled it off the wall with one quick yank.

This just in... man robs local TGIF's and makes his get-away on old BMX bike!Acording to local authorities the middle-aged man was wearing a vintage bmx tee-shirt and checkerd Vans shoes. Acording to the store manager, the theif made off with 123.00 in cash and a vintage BMX bike valued around 850.00. The man was said to have been yelling "your not getting this one Huntcart" and laughing hysterically as he rode away.

Thanks, whoever you are. We all love these bikes, some of us--as obnoxious as we might sound--do not really have nothing against you. They are just concerned about the way the bikes are displayed.
The majority of us appreciate that you guys are putting our sport in the limelight.

Fridays does not want to spend a ton of money on these bikes, like I said i get alot of bike really cheap and make them look nice so the cost of the bikes averages out to alot lower price than just the really nice ones I get. I am always looking for bikes.

I have told them not to hang them like that maybe some of these that you are seeing screwed on the wall are ones that we remolded in the beginning. I will try to figure out a way that they can be hung without being drilled, but also so they cant be used as a get away car by robbers

Good to see you here Lucas, you have bought 4-5 bikes from me including CYC, Diamond Back, Powerlite . I am the person that contacted you a year or so back about finding a good way to mount the bikes in TGIF's. I know you and Michelle are good people and are trying to do the right thing. The mounting cables and a bolt thru the pedal boss is a good idea (if the other pedal is not lost after it is removed). Thanks for all your help with these issues and saving the bikes from any damage.
peace,brett

Hey Michelle here...just want to clarify a couple of things I have read. First of all, we are not TGIF corporate employees. We are not money hungry monsters out to ruin BMX history. We are are own, very small business (Lucas and I only), and we have worked very hard these past 3 years to put together a decor package that is not full of "old junk."
For those of you that don't know, TGIF is in the process of remodeling ever single existing restaurant (over 500 in the US alone) with a new decor scheme. The new decor scheme includes the BMX bikes. If you still see the old pedal cars, dirty looking decor, then that store has not been remodeled yet.
Yes, TGI Friday's did spend who knows how much money about 3 years ago to figure out if they were going in the right direction - with focus groups, market surveys, etc. They realized the look they had had for over 30 years was not the way to go.
I have worked with Friday's for over 12 years. I am not a "corporate" type person and never have been. Quite honestly the people at Friday's corporate are some of the nicest, most down to earth people I have ever worked with. They are just as excited and appreciative to see nice BMX bikes as we are.
The part of this that is probably my fault is that we have been so busy (we sent out over 150 new store packages this year) that we have not had time to truly monitor the installation of the bikes. But like Lucas said earlier, we will come up with an installation method that will work for every wall surface, every store layout, and include that installation hardware with the bikes as we ship them out, with instructions on how to hang, and the importance of not drilling into the bikes.
And for the person that said I was probably now at vintagesurfboard.com, I have a guy in CA that makes all my surfboards for me. He makes them to look vintage and puts the original TGIF logo on them.
One more thing...if you see TGIF items being auctioned anywhere, that would be the old decor from remodeled stores being auctioned. And Friday's gives all the proceeds from that to charity.
I guess that is enough...sorry for the long post.
Michelle

An easy way would be to use some of the bolt points already on the bike. Make a simple bracket to screw to the wall and slip the other end under an axle nut. Slide another in under the neck. Should not go anywhere.

I have put my 2, 3, 4, 5 cents in here. I still say if the bikes are handed to the installers with the racks that they are to be hung from, that would be ideal.
How about custom TGIF racks? I can make one up for ya! I'll draft one up in 3D CAD first if you want!?
They could be used in conjuction with those lighted led signs in the spokes!.....OK too much....
If you want a Wholesaler for the BUA ones I showed in the previous photos , I could hook you up there too!
I still like to see stuff like that to talk about over a steak and a beer...
(Disclaimer.....no bikes, including The Sting with the rather large lag bolt through it, were harmed in any of my photos. But a good magician never reveals his tricks.)

A friend of mine stopped over, and we were amusing ourselves with this topic.
However, he reached over to this very bike pictured above, and while playing the role of 5 year old. He managed to get his arm slammed by the graphites/spokes, his hand pinched in the chain and both sprockets, and his fingers stuck in the pedals!
So I hope that they are installed up high, because I found his offer to "Tack Weld" the BB, and hubs rather disenchanting..... but is was still pretty funny in a sick sort of way!
Nobody has even brought that up yet have they?
lol! As George Jetson often said..."Jane get me off of this crazy thing!??"

well I will not be selling COMPLETE BIKES ever .
I think there is more money to be made by splitting the bike up anyway. all parts sold seperatly and thus targeting my BMX brothers who need that ONE part. so TGIF can feel free to hang up a pair of DX levers.
what is TGIF going to do if there are NO COMPLETE BIKES............Its taken me 3 years to find the parts for my 81 Diamond Back senior pro...TGIF is not gonna wait that long to try and build one. they will be forced to do somthing else.
YOU heard 500 shops in the USA alone how many COMPLETE BIKES IS THAT.

THIRD time (third thread!)...Because of VBMXers, they will be careful not to harm the bikies. Also, these bikes will apparently be auctioned when the stores are done with them. That makes me feel a little better about the whole thing, how 'bout you?

Far as hanging safe and secure -
Think stockades the kind that were used in colonial days...
Hinge and an opening large enough to clamp the frame at one end. Wall mount bracket at the other end. Close it over the frame. Bolt it to the wall.
Use rubber or foam or similar insert to adapt for different frame tube diameters and to protect.
Two per bike - top tube & seat tube.
Adaptable. Simple. Safe. Secure. Keeps the bike-huggers at bay.
Win Win Win.
I will make them for you.

Thanks for doing what you are doing. I mean this honestly, seeing the memorabilia is what this hobby is truely about. I for one would like to offer you a bike, just put a store near me please. The bike will be say???? Just not a Powerlite, you should not put Powerlites in TGIF, send them to me first...
Glad to see a fellow bike guy is working on them and receiving the enjoyment that so many of us get from making these treasures to us look good again.
I support the chain and although have none in the Marion or Carbondale, IL area look forward to stopping by TGIF on my next trip. Now when you talk with coorporate tell them that the competition is booming in my area with TGIF, Applebees and O'Charlies I am getting tired of having to wait to get in on anynight of the week!
Auctioning the items for charity, now that is a class act!
Welcome to Vintage and show us your collection, start taking pics of the bikes you send out to the stores.

The stockades idea sounds good, although they would have to be small and nice looking but it sounds good. I like to hear more about that idea. I could probably take pictures of the nicest and coolest bikesand post them. There is no way I would have time to do that with every bike.
I would like to see your bike puddleduck. I have put several bikes near where people i get them from live. We have already sent out several stores in Illinois.
Thanks for what most of you are saying. I will always try to put the best bikes I can in these stores. Michelle and I both work very hard on these stores and enjoying doing it, so thanks

Hi Michelle and Lucas,
Thanks for stepping into the fray and responding to concerns here.
I have to say, I'm not a regular at TGIFs - but I've been there - and I have appreciation for all kinds of vintage items, not just BMX... so my initial reaction the first time I visited a TGIF was "what a shame that there's a hole going through that great vintage item just to show it on the wall".
To me - it shows more disrespect for the things that we hold dear than it does to inspire any warm and fuzzy feelings in me about the nostalgia. If you have any influence over this at TGIF I hope that you guys can come up with a way to preserve these items instead of destroying their inherent value.
It's great that you recycle the items by selling them off when you're done with them, but maybe take that money and use it for fixtures to adhere the items to the wall so as not to damage them.
How about a new twist on the theme, instead of simply buying up items - look for guys like us who would be happy to let you display some of our collections and the related memorabilia, spending your money instead on hiring someone like Ted to design the fixtures for these items.
How cool to walk into a TGIF and see Ted Carl's World champ winning Schwinn Sting, the trophy and a pic... a ton of local folk that you're targeting would know something about the scene and appreciate some history - instead of looking at a big screw going through something bought off Ebay that makes them feel a bit uneasy about the power of the dollar and TGIF's ability to flex their financial muscle, and screw something nostalgic to the wall so they can wax nostalgic while they chomp down on deep fried jalapenos and sip their margaritas.
Let me be the first to offer - you can use my '83 Factory Robinson, jersey, a trophy and photo in your St. Louis Park, MN location - as long as you don't screw it to the wall! I'm sure plenty of your demographic targets would either know of one of us - or at the very least get a bigger kick out of learning something about the local history of something they can relate to.
YOU could be "my neighborhood grill" instead of Chili's
And please don't drill any holes in those Burton Snowboards you bought recently - that would be a real shame.
At the very least, please look into making some fixtures to hang these things to the wall and ceilings - otherwise it just looks tacky and unappreciative of the history of these items. Some simple metal strapping could wrap around these items (paint it black) and you'd cause no damage.

Hey Shawn Sheely MN-1, Stay eating at Chilis! Tgif will not go for your Idea, They instead will grasp at keeping the last memo or meeting held on the decor in focus in order to do what they call a specific target share and or demographic! They want the entire spotlite on themselves! Chili's babyback ribs rock!

My neighborhood grill is actually Lyle's Liquor Lounge - no amount of corporate dough can match it's "ambiance" and Funky Uptown girl scenery.
I don't eat at either of those places if I can help it, although my dad loves to go to Chili's for the baby backs
steef
Jan 28 2006, 01:58 PM
Lyle's? Ewww. That place is far too hipster for me. Their old happy hours used to be great. I can't imagine what it would take to duplicate the "ambiance" in there.
