Have you done any sweet jumps on that bike? happy.gif It sure looks purdy.
jipster43
Naugh! I'm not as rad as JPBMXFOOL! I have ridden it around the track a couple of times and around the block a lot. I'm easing into real riding - but that's what I built it for. In ten years time it will look like a true survivor!

Finally got my Steve Skibel replica done after six years of waiting for DG grips for it!

Started off with the DG mini competition forks, any others around, and was able to match up a Super Pro Mini frame that was modified by Myke Landis's Dad to make a dual rear dropouts. The only real difference is the Sugino made stem first advertised for DG but never produced for them and it became a Powerlite stem.

Both Steve Sr. and Jr. enjoyed seeing the bike again and it's been great to catch up with Steve Jr.

Hope you had a great and safe 4th of July!!!

Wow! Great collection and a nice tribute!

There were 5 DG's in roseville yesterday. 3 20's and 2 cruisers. What was funny to me is that there were also to rampar r10's. I remembered that i wanted a dg but i had a r10.

Cleaned up my DG, but need a fork to put a bike together. Anyone have one for sale? Don't know what year, but this is the serial #17202. Looks like a 81 according to corvette jim's list. Sorry got a thruster in the background...

J.T.
Picked up some DG mini competition forks in 2001 and never thought to do anything with them until I was able to purchase the DG Super Pro mini frame modified by Myke's Dad who added a second rear dropout.

The bike came to life but for a couple of years I couldn't find the DG Octopus grips until this year. I first had an alloy single gooseneck but decided to use the DG stem that was advertised once but the Sugino made stem became a Powerlite instead.

Have some Super Pro rims, not in gold, so I decided to lace up the NOS Campy hub set to gold Araya 7b 1st gens.

The first person to see it was Steve Skibel Jr. and he thought it was great! Compiled the below video for Steve Skibel Sr. and he too thought it was great to see this bike alive again with a few little twists while keepin' it real.

Steve got his break by becoming a Webco Team member with David Clinton, Jeff Bottema, and Stuart Thomsen managed by Chuck Robinson. Chuck left for a DG opportunity in 1976 and the guys followed. Steve Sr. was always looking out to make Steve's bike lighter and faster. The "mini" evolution was started and the incorporation of 10 speed alloy componentry into BMX began.

Mini frame, forks, handlebars were a new market and DG took advantage of this. The Stronglight Competition alloy headset and bottom bracket, from road racing, was weight savings. The Regina Oro 10 speed 3/32" chain, Kenda tires, 16" tubes, built-in seatpost clamp, drilling brakes, and hardly a seatpost added up to Steve's success.

Steve loved BMX and also loved MX in which he pursued. Now his son races BMX and you can see Steve at some of the local Orange county BMX tracks!

Hope you enjoy the bike as much as the Skibel's have.

Given the larger diameter fork legs and oval brake bridge and seat stay, I think you have a ZF1 DG. Later frame and fork towards the end, but with better geometry (Steep head angle and longer top tube).

Just found a chrome chrome-moly DG Racer with all old vintage 1976-77 stuff on it. We found no serial number on it anywhere. Why? What year frame might this be? I'll post photos later. It may be for sale too.

Tom

Euro BB or American? Does it have the Same gusset and brake bridge as yours? Late 77 went to round brake bridge. Pictures please!
Tom Hand
Round and the same as mine. Can't post any pictures, no room! I can email some though! It has aluminum handlebars and a fluted seat post with Araya rims.

Does anyone have any DG Diecut decals in black for sale? I tried calling Sunsigns in Portland but no one answers the phone or calls back after I leave a message. Please PM me if you can help. Thanks.

It took me a long time to get a hold of the folks at Sun Signs, but they're there. Just keep trying!

I finally got my hands on a DG Racer 1, just like the one I raced BITD. It's serial number put's her at a '77, but I have been told she is a 'bit' unique with the full weld, straight 'D' and square rear brake mount? This is all second hand information, maybe more people out her can speak to this....

That would be DG1 "Jeff Bottema" Model. Nice frame and fork. I bet she is a Nov or Dec frame.

its very difficult to tell were the 79 and 80 break in ser#`s because of so many people installing the wrong head tube sticker because its so hard to find the black/prizm sticker.
77,78,and 79 have the black/prizm head tube sticker. and 1980 has the blue/gold sticker and late 1981 has the black and chrome right side up and up side down sticker.

DG ser# list as of Mar 2, 2010 ***Note 1979 and after is in most cases an educated guess
Im doing as much research as i can and it looks like about Sept 1981 might be the last of the DG
its very difficult to tell were the 79 and 80 break in ser#`s because of so many people installing the wrong head tube sticker because its so hard to find the black/prizm sticker.
77,78,and 79 have the black/prizm head tube sticker. and 1980 has the blue/gold sticker and late 1981 has the black and chrome right side up and up side down sticker.

CorvetteJim1968,

Thanks for maintaining this DG registry. I know you put a lot of work into it.

Regarding your statement about the black & gold prism sticker being hard to find, I do have a few left as well as many other NOS DG stickers (gusset, DG Racer, DG Jr Racer, Kyle Fleming, Steve Skibel, 4130 Chromemoly, etc.). Not trying to sell here, but anyone having probs finding NOS DG stickers for their build can PM me.

I hope I don’t muddy the water, but I have a few history tidbits regarding the transition year, 1979. I made a pitch to become the Hawaii distributor for DG BMX in early 1979. Ed Smith came to Hawaii to check out my company and attend a race that DG co-sponsored with my company. We had a great turnout of 400+ entries as DG gave away a frame, fork, gear bag and other DG apparel and what seemed like 1,000 stickers. This race on March 18, 1979 was covered by BMX Plus! in their July 1979 issue. In an undated letter to their dealers, Allen Fife, General Manager, DG Performance Bicycles states that they purchased “the bicycle division from DG Performance Specialties last April”. The point of all this is that the transition from Anaheim to San Diego started in early 1979.

In a letter dated October 10, 1979, Mr. Fife advises all DG BMX dealers that “Effective this date all DG frames and complete bicycles must be registered with DG Performance Bicycles to validate the warranty.” In my opinion, this implies that the San Diego manufacturing plant may have been up and running in October 1979. If so, it may be possible that some late 1979 frames might have come from San Diego with the blue & gold headtube sticker, whereas frames from old stock may still have been shipping with the older black & gold prism stickers.

Just my $0.02 worth.

I cut this out of BMX Action and had to have one. I rode it until I snapped a Dura-Ace crank, a shaft on one of the Reedys, cracked the cups on the ex-600 headset and bent the fork. The rims and Bullseye hubs were bulletproof and made it through another build. I always had a problem with the Bullseye Roller bracket backing itself out of the frame. So, if anyone finds a DG frame with a european bottom bracket with two set screw holes drilled and tapped in the bottom, that was my California Pro frame.Click to view attachment

Awesome history there JT! Thanks! That Hawaiian race was held just two days after I got my DG for my B-day.
