Is this the ad you were thinking of?

these are from TIM's museum thread:

I know that dg had chrome, black, yellow and candy apple red and blue. What colors were offered on the super pro and early DG Skibel (no gusset)? Trying to get them back to an original color, they were chrome and that's not in the budget. Was the only black the California Pro?
Thanks

this is a good question. anyone know what colors they all came in? not just the superpros but any of them?

Mine originally was white with red components and I got it in 79. I've never seen another one with that color scheme. (proline colors) or even another white one anywhere.

Here is your answer circa Jan 1979

I like how Bottema throws Stu under the bus in that interview. Awesome. Bottema is what made DG so cool.
jipster43
Anyone know which issue of BMXA had the article/interview with Kyle Flemming? I'm guessing it was in the summer of '79, but I'm not sure which month. I thought I had that issue hanging around somewhere, but I seem to have landed in bizarro world, 'cause I can't locate it now. Any info/scans of Kyle's bike would be mass rad!

gracias!

thats what I liked about bike gallery in portland, they didn't just build bikes to what the factory specs were, but custom built them to how customers wanted them built.
I talked to my dad today and he said he had the bike built to what he thought I'd like.
the bike gallery kicked A$$!!
white with red components, and red decals. never seen another one like it.

Muchas gracias fellas! That's exactly what I was looking for. Does anyone have any personal pics of Kyle's bike? Ben (Joy), do you have some pics of your old DG's? As I recall your builds were pretty similar to Kyle's. I spent the past two days cruisin' around in my DG t-shirt until my wife made me put in the hamper.

Thanks again for the scans fellas!

I just got this frameset in the mail this afternoon.
It'll be next winters project so I have a lot of time to think through the parts layout.
So far the crown jewel is the NOS weinman rims. A friend/VBMX member offered them up last Saturday. Blew me away as I didn't realize he had such a stash of minty items.

Think I'll do a "mechanical yellow jacket" theme with yellow/silver/black, and just a splash of blue here and there. Rolling on all black Cheng Shins for sure.

Isn't the D and G and the seat post supposed to be on opposite sides of each other?

jipster43
The seatpost decals on yer bic is just as they were on my DG back in the day. Nice score! I'm a huge fan of the Weinmans myself.

DG Super Pro and Skibel back from paint. I think I may have A super pro jr.? TT is 17.5'' very short but could use an expert opinion.
BenOr
It's a SuperPro. It was the 70's we were small. Junior would have almost a straight line from HT to rear dropouts. Even short seat tube than Skibel.

BTW - Cool frames.
RandyS
A friend of mine has one of Kyle bikes, Kyles parents gave it to him after he died. It's just hanging in a barn in Az. last I heard.
The Red Baron
Hey Ben, I knew someone once who rode a DG. LOL

Sweet frames Mang! Is there a specific powder number for the DG candy apple blue?

They were electro painted dupont intense blue tried to match it off an old set of dg bars.

This bike was built with 99% original owned parts that have just been cleaned a little, so yes there are scuffs and scratches.I would like to put another neck on and plan on lacing araya 7B's on low flange shimano hubs which I also still have and I know the grips are generic! The DG Skibel is next.I am also looking for a couple uni shims.
Thanks for looking.]
Ken Pliska
Here are two that I no longer have in my collection.

I sold off DG California Pro #39 about a year ago. Very cool bike and I used to drool over these when I was a kid.

The DG Vulcan 26" Cruiser I sold late last year. Fun to ride but very big and laid back.
Ken Pliska

My 1981 DG Looptail 24. I ordered it new when they first came out and this is number 60 of the 1981 looptails. I remember racing number 8 (the Bike Gallery loaner bike) while waiting for number 60 to arrive.

Picked up this frame on eBay one day. I think it was just listed as "bike frame" or something like that. 1977 DG Junior that has had a quickie repair at the seat-tube by the original owner. Built it up with some parts I had sitting around last year.

Picked this up last week after making a deal for it last summer. I just hadn't had time to get back to the High Desert to grab this. This has been sitting, untouched since about 1982. CBR Hubs, 7B hoops, Torker Stem, FMF Bars, Yellow Label Comp II Tires in Blue. Classic scoot.

The day after I picked up my friend's 1977 Junior, this showed up two neighborhoods over from me. It had Yellow Comp IIIs, no grips or brake cable, and a broken Uni seat on it. It was missing its cranks but did have its Stronglight BB still there. Luckily, my 1977 purchase came with an extra set of cranks (along with lots of NOS items) so those are now on this 1978 Super Pro. Very low serial number and perfect paint and decals (IMO) for a 30 year old race bike.

Since 1981, I have always owned at least one DG in my little collection of bikes. This was an unexpected grab and is certainly a keeper for now.

Nothing says DG BMX like a nice Aggressor MX on the front and a C-183 on the rear.
PJR
Ken-sweet bikes!!Wish I could come across them like that!!

Yup, these are all real.

Did those decals come from Bend? Nice. Save thise Weinert for me in case I get that Stadium from DAN... He needs a European Mechanic to build some bikes.
guest_070901
Next winter's part's pile got the better of me so I had to slap it all together to see how it feels.
Never rode a DG in the past therefore I was EXTREMELY curious.

First impression....doesn't need a laid back to be rideable but it's definitely on the short side.
Doesn't sit as tall as a Rampar R10 but it feels tall.
Has a definite chopper rake but it doesn't feel quite as deep and choppered as a Rampar R11xl.
It might be rather similar to a Schwinn SX-1000 geometry, but I'm purely pulling that reference from ancient memory.

Thurmonr
Bridgecity - I don't think that's a '77. The DG was smaller and the D was not rounded in '77
guest_070901
found this at bmxmuseum, so the decals are whatever year"later" would mean.
Letters are over 3 inches long and 1.5 inches tall.Made to fit in DG gusset.

This is the early version, 2 different headtube sizes were made.

The Later ones had a curved D. early have a straight down D.

What year do you think it is?
What I know about DG I learned in this thread so I'm open for more insight. smile.gif

DGs are sometimes hard to ID but they are almost alway good looking bikes! Your's would be a good example...

Try Ben Joy (BenOr)
If it can be dated he can date it - the guy is a DG encyclopedia. I think the rounded D came out in ’78. It’s my understanding the later frames are hard to date.

Thurm is right Ben has been a tremendous help with my DG's. The D on pre 78 is straight across the top. The museum has several DG's. It won't be long I'll have the Skibel posted. I am looking for some of the original stickers the Skibel had (no gusset).
BenOr
Oh Grass Hopper you have learned well! rolleyes.gif 1978 or later with that gusset. Early models had a rhyme to their serial numbers. Later appear random (like PMS paint colors for the bikes).

Details of early frames are:

- Gusset weld is intermittent (verse solid bead) is 1976 to 1977
- Square brake bridge is early
- 78 was more traditonal logo gusset
- Full size frames have the stamped tapered dropouts
- Skibels and juniors always have flat drop outs
- Skibels came without and later with gussets

Thurmor - I have the catalog, but will send it later this week.

Just picked up a DG frame. Found this thread and dug up some old Motocross Action mags.
I know it's a motocross ad but it's in color and shows some cool stuff. Wallet, tote bag, shirts and hats. From 1980:

PJR
Cool ad! After bmx and to this day I ride dirt bikes and 4-wheelers and DG is still a great product. It's cool having a couple DG bmx'ers and your buddies with DG pipes, nerf bars, bumpers....... it goes on forever. They freak out on the resurrected bikes in the garage with the same emblems.
Keep_It_Warm
Might as well bump this great thread yet again....

I recently found a June, 1977 Steve Skibel DG. Square brake bridge, DG gusset, flat dropouts. It needs a refinish as the original finish was stripped and then sprayed.

What head tube decal am I looking for? What about the gusset decals? Are they a solid color? Or prism-type?
BenOr
Black ink over gold prism for head tube decal. Gusset should be prism. Gary at bmx museum has repop gusset decals. Realtorken Ken has everything else.
