speaking of DG,
In the 90's I wrote a letter to DG performance looking for decals for my old DG and this is what I got from them, along with a couple decals. no bmx ones though.
can anyone tell what the name of the dude who wrote this?

this is the most interesting piece of history I've read in awhile.
the yellow blue theme really helps sell that pretty gussetted bike.
They must still be quite popular because I've been watching ebay for a fixerupper for a long time and every time one comes up it ends early. (In the meantime that vintage yellow wheelset will quietly wait for the proper frame to surface!)

one of the DG's I have didn't have a hole in the brake bridge either and the guy I got it from said it was an early one, but it has the newer logo, so I would assume that it's one of the first years they made the newer logo ones, which is 1977 I believe.

when i started in '79 i was just riding my bike to the local track. after a couple months i started catching rides to other tracks with marc hebert and his dad. marcs dad was a former flattrack racer and marc had two DG racers that were beautiful and he was very fast on them. that was my inspiration for getting the zf-1. that is a frozen stream outside of indy somewhere. we stayed with the relatives of one of my teammates when we went to the world championships. we rode that stream for about five miles.

I just found this page on Google. I will have to take some time to read all of it. I am a retired Factory Sponsored DG racer from 1980. I left DG and took a ride with Bear Development/JMC. After I read this thread I will go to my garage to find old pictures and DG stuff that I might still have.
Does anyone know if DG ever put disc brakes on any of their riders bikes? I don't remember the year, but they were talking to my Team Manager and getting me to try it on my Cruiser in Portland for an ABA National. I flew down with both bikes and my Cruiser with disc brakes was not ready yet. At the end of that season I parted ways with DG and signed on to Bear Development. Didn't race much beacuse of school, girlfriends and cars. So I lost my ride.
I loved my old DG BMX and 26" Cruiser. DG was my favorite ride. Does anyone know where I can get a original Chrome Plated DG Frame and Forks set?

That what it was! Belt Drive Cruiser with Disc Brakes. I was promised it two or three ABA Nationals and I think it was in Portland was my last race with DG.
What do you mean about ... "We have Bike Gallery in common"?

Bike Gallery in Portland was one of DG's largest dealers. When you said Portland and DG I made the connection. Steve Skibel Sr past on Juniors frames to us when Jt stopped racing. I only knew of Kevin Harlow racing 26" DG's back in 1980. He, Kos, OM, TInker, Littlethorpe and I raced the first ABA Crusier Pro national back around that time. Who are you?

In 80', both San Diego guys at the time Byron Friday (full fctory DG)
and Chis Foster (co factory DG) both raced DG 26" bikes a little.
Chris Foster got a small pic racing Breithaupt in Pro Cruiser class
in BMX Plus coverage of the 1980 ABA/ SE Narler national at the Anaheim Convention Center
Chris Foster also got a photo in BMX Action at the 1980 or 1981 ABA Winter Nationals at Chandler.
There was a trench jump behind the track. Some guy was tabletopping it and you can clearly
see Chris Foster in the background on his DG 26".

How about some more pics of the late Kyle Flemming, his replica bike etc...I met him at the Torker Great lakes national in lansing MI 1980, just lowly 11 novice hangin around the trophy table when Kyle handed me his plaque for mid pack finish in the 11-12 open, My first real contact with a Factory rider of my age. Ihave a DG super pro ready to restore with all the old school parts But may need help with a few. I also have a Steve Skibel replica DG frame I'm looking to restore. I'm new to all of this but was a decent racer in Indiana in the 70's & 80's. I haven't found anyone who knows about the Skibel DG and if it's worth the effort I'm assuming it is and that it is somewhat rare. Parts I have for both are Cook Bros. bars, Dura Ace Cranks, DG & Powerlite forks, uni-seats, Araya rims ,Shimano hubs, Mcs gooseneck.I had a chance to race my idol Kyle Fleming same class at the Jag World Championships and actually pulled the holeshot but he got me in the second turn and I finished third in that moto and eventually ended up 22nd in tyhe world I,m 39 now and starting to get the kids involved in a sport I thought was dead until a year ago

I was at the ABA/ DG Nationals in La Mirada Ca in 1980.
It was practice in the staging area and was two rows behind the gate.
Kyle Fleming was in front of me.
Gate dropped and he decided to go the next gate.
Fleming said, "Hey why don't you go ahead of me."
I was a little shocked, "Gee thanks Kyle."
It was kind of a nothing deal, but I never forgot it.
Kyle FLeming was a very tough compettitor and a great BMX racer.
DG Steve Skibel Replica.
Funny, Steve Skibel is 40 years old now!
That is a very rare frame.
I had a little decal in my posession for years that said
"Steve Skibel Replica".
It belonged to DG's Pro Byron Friday.
He had lost it at my house back in 1980.
I mailed it back to him in 2007.
Kevin Harlow...
Do you guys realize that Kevin is the son of Gary Harlow.
Dan Harlow is Gary Harlow's brother.
Dan is the "D" Gary Harlow is the "G" .......
They are the original founders of "DG".
Kevin Harlow still is a very good racer.
While racing last wekend at the 2008 ABA So. Cal Nationals
at Lake Perris, Kevin took a pretty hard fall in his Cruiser main.
He's going to be ok, but that was pretty scary.
Kevin Harlow you rock!
Sat's 46-50 cruiser main was a legend lineup. Leary, Unhassibiscay, Harlow, Weber, GI Joe, etc.

I asked Kevin later if he was going to be okay? (he didn't look all that good) He tells me, "Well, probably a few cracked ribs, I don't think it's anything that I need to go to the hospital for"
He says he's just going rest up and get ready for Phoenix. Kevin DOES rock!

there was a kid who was a st pete local BITD named john harbet. he only raced something like 2 and a half years but had picked up a co factory DG ride around 80-81. our kids were in cub scouts together a couple of years ago. he said he had gone to the worlds in indy and missed his semi and became disillusioned with the sport and quit not too long after. i remember him being real fast and now he's partners in a company called night spiker. they do glow in the dark volleyball games.

Looks just like the '77 DG that was stolen from me back in '82. Except mine was sportin' the nickel Redline forks.
I'm supposed to be getting my taxes ready for my meetin' with the accountant tomorrow morning, so of course I'm super stoked to see the DG thread brought back from the undead! I've been s l o w l y compiling parts for my sacreligious DG build. I haven't decided if I'll go with yellow like my old bike, or candy apple blue like Kyle Flemming's bike - the bike I would have had if I could have afforded it.
So far I have the dura ace cranks, the era correct phil wood hubs, Weinmann 7b style rims (and a real 7b for the front), the tuff neck, and some of the pads. Still need to find some Reedy pedals (wish I hadn't sold a pair a few years back - are those repops still available somewhere?). My build is sacreligious in that I'm taking a ZF-1 and building it as if it were a 1979 Super Pro - a project I would be willing to arrest if I came across a real Super Pro frame.
Anyway. It's been super cool reading all the factory riders input. I would love to see some pics of Kyle's bike. I remember a b/w photo of his bike from an article BMXA did on him in the summer of '79, but I haven't seen any other pics aside from that. As I recall he had SuperPro rims on that jobber. I'm not holding my breath on finding a set of those, so the combo I have in my possession is going to have to do.
peas homies!

DG is a brand that wasn't represented at our little midwest track, I noticed their ads in the old mags, liked the pale yellow/blue color scheme but have known ZERO about them until reading this thread.
And it kinda hooked me. not kinda, it did for sure.
so you mention tax returns, well where were you Sunday! I've been bidding on ebay for fun, no serious bids just playing the market. 1azbikeman seems like a consistent winner of the fixerupper auctions. so I drop the reserve bid on that set above last week figuring someone else would pick up the slack. Much to my surprise I ended up with it. I'm gonna have to hide it in the attic cause my wife would KILL me for yet another bike project in the house.
but now the planning is coursing through my brain:
so far I've got some Schwinn Hubs in UKAIs sitting around that need lots of TLC.
I've got an 80ish Tufneck that needs a ton of TLC.
I found some steel rat traps and an early 70s leather racing saddle in my old bike stash in the parent's attic.
As I look back in the mid to late 70s we still thought 10 speeds were totally cool and super high tech, so it seems like it'd be appropriate to find some very 10speedish 3 piece cranks, or modify some old 10 speed cranks.
I haven't a clue on what bars would be nice looking yet large enough to actually ride, nor have I pondered what grips would be perfect yet affordable in today's market.
please keep us updated on your build as I'll find it inspirational.
cheers!
