oc dave
JP,when you gonna build one of your crusiers?
jpbmxfool
yo.. oc dave they're not crusiers...they are all 20z!!! i am a slow builder.....but my 1976 chamption is almost finished!!!
BenOr
That cut out gusset frame is so nice. It needs the nickel Redline forks and you need DG forks for the DG2. You have the first three basic areas of DGs right there. Just find a ZF1 to complete the set.
EMPI
im jealous lol
John Piant
Okay Johnny. I will take a stab at it. The skinny kid leaning on the DG is John Piant. I think that is Byron's butt. That is Ed Smith's mobile home, that Byron just tore the fender off of....lol. And the rest is a blank. Do I get partial credit??????
JohnnyJohnson OMAS DirtSlinger
John Piant!

That pic is of me talking to you. Byron rented a room from my dad and I when he lived in San Diego (1980). So I used to say hi to you whenever I would see you back then. That was 25 years ago, so it wouldn't bum me out too much if you didn't remember me. Hahaha! It's cool.

Byron is in the back working on his bike. He was an awesome roommate. We used to ride together all the time back in 1980. Less than a year after he moved back to L.A., I won (doubled) my first national. Byron trained me good. He's always been a great friend.

The little guy next to you in the Gap t-shirt is Kiyomi Waller. He was a good amatuer in the early 80's and became a top amateur racer in the late 80's. In the 90's he won quite a few national #1 Pro Cruiser titles. Got about 10 magazine cover shots too. Still a good friend of mine too. He just staarted racing again after a 5 year layoff. He's made pretty much every main in Vet Pro at every national he's entered this year.
John Piant
Wow. I actually remember that, now. Cool, I was wondering if I ever met you.Too funny. Hey, ask Byron about the #@@ chewing we got when we took Ed his motorhome with the rear fender mostly missing. Ah, those were the days.....
JohnnyJohnson OMAS DirtSlinger
Byron driving a motorhome and returning it without a fender.................

Is that supposed to sound unusual?
Hahahaha!

A pro BMX dirt jumper friend of mine, Cory Nastazio said something about Byron fishtailing a trailer on the freeway once.....
I don't know if that's true or not......

Is that supposed to sound unusual too?
Hahahaha!

JP….hella LTNS!!! What up dude….

JP, I think the damaged motor home incident you’re referring to took place some where else – If I remember right it was at DG Ramona factory? Yeah, I remember how Mr. Smith used his petty tactics to beak down (spiritually and mentally) this young teenager. Johnny’s Dad Al, sure helped me out in those days, he taught me about how to overcome adversities! Just some BS that happened a long time ago.

Johnny’s photo is a significant reference point for me at that point in time. I could write a long winded and detailed story about:

-product development, prototype testing and why it’s not a good idea to test prototypes products at important races.

-Company owners having (or not having) their finger on the pulse of what’s going on with-in the company. Having worked for both Redline and Green Duck, I have some interesting reflections on how a Green Duck turned into Lame Duck…..

Times when it did not pay to use new stuff at important races:

-Shimano NBA Grand’s, Randal Ranch –leading main event, component mechanical failure.

- NBA RC Cola Race of Champions, Ascot Park – leading main event, cantilever brake post broke off in the middle of the first turn.

- NBA – National Los Angeles Arena – leading the Simi Main, proto type component mechanical failure.

- NBA Nation –Jammin Jimmy Weinert Mountain, leading the Simi Main, proto type component mechanical failure.

- ABA Pro Spectacular-Anaheim -- leading the Simi Main, proto type frame and component mechanical. Photo reference- Motor home with fender ripped off, John Piant, Johnny Johnson, Yo Yo Waller and Byron wrenching on a roachy proto type bike. Ask me how I like flipping over the bars and lawn darting the concrete floor!!!!!!!

Not to mention so many other times when I did retarded stuff or retarded stuff happened to me. Just ask PK, Hillage, The OM, Stud and others. May be I will start a thread – “retarded stuff I like to do on the Holidays!” LOL….

Kevin and Byron -

I'd like to hear more about DG. Anaheim era and GreenDuck era. Why was it sold to Greenduck? Did they actually build frames for Anaheim? Who built the early frames as they look more Webco.

I'd like to know THE REAL STORY as Sandy would say!
John Piant
Byron! You forgot the fender.
Okay, check this out. I fly into San Diego, to hang out at the luxurios DG Factory, and then take the Factory box van up to Anahiem with Byron doing the driving. We pull in, and there are entrance gates, for when people are paying to park. There is a guy guarding the parking lot And keeping the riff raf out of the factory pits. Okay, for the people who don't know the joke. We didn't have a box van, and there are not factory pits. I was dreaming of a Supercross race. Anyway. The guard is telling us we have plenty of room. Mobile home was not in the design plans of the arena parking lot. So, this guy is standing right in front of the truck, looking down the side, and tellin Byron he has plenty of room between the fiberglass fender, and a pole. Byron, is inching up, not being able to see in the blind spot. And runs right in to the pole, ripping the fender off. The guy just shrugs, says, "huh, I thought it would make it" And walks off. Great start to a weekend, huh?

Ben,
Q. Why was it sold to Greenduck?
A. To inject capitol into D.G. Performance Specialties (Anaheim.) Those were tough times for the motocross industry due to the oil crisis. Remember the gas lines, even / odd days of rationing? Ironically, it was sold just before the BMX boom of the early '80's. Oh well.

Q. Did they actually build frames for Anaheim?
A. No, Green Duck did not build any frames for Anaheim. Anaheim had it's own fab shop in house.

Q. Who built the early frames as they look more Webco.
A. I am 99% certain that it was Pro Fab (Pete Wilkins and Marc Bahner.) However, it wasn't long until DG Anaheim had their own fab shop. But that does not actually answer your question. The reason that the early frames look like Webco's is because Chuck Robinson brought Webco's design with him when he left Webco for DG.

Hope this helps,
Kevin

Oh, B.T.W.......Johnny J.
Cool pics of Byronious.

wow, i checked ebay and that helmet above went over 500$
JohnnyJohnson OMAS DirtSlinger
Kevin Harlow,
I've never seen you on a 20". RAD PIC!

I won 12 novice at that Cook Bros. Classic race in Irvine with Kiyomi Waller right behind me. They made us race novice for some stupid reason.
Some 12 Experts gave me a lot of cr-ap for that win.
EMPI
Not mine, owner unknown? thought id share.
who ever owns this, PM me for decals
TeamRob
Here is my newest aquisition: Anyone know about these? Ever seen one? I cannot find it in any catalog, too bad I am too big for it.

John Piant
Yeah, I have seen one like that. In fact, that might be it. It was just a jacket that DG motorcycles had that I wore for the BMX side.
BenOr
Didn't know DG had a roller disco squad? I'm glad you didn't find the shorts to go with it.
darinb123
Off the subject BUT, this bike has a DG pipe and DG cool head..... Don't see DG stuff on 1974 MR50 Elsinore very often. Any have a nice DG bike they would trade for????? Darin

BenOr
A DG MR50 is very on the subject! Thanks for sharing it.

No bike to trade, but someone must apprecaite that cool bike.
cornfed
How come the head isn't gold? A gold DG head and matching swingarm was THE SHIZNIT when I was a kid...

We called them DG "porcupine" heads when we were kids...
BenOr
You needed the gold and pipes on a DG equipped Yamaha RD400 Daytona Special.
cornfed
YES!!! For sure!!!
nitrotwang
Here you go.. early DG Factory gear ....Jeff Bottema's 1977-79 personal race gear and prototype Bottema forks 20" and 26"...bulletproof, bombproof and built to look like a Motorcycle MX fork, check out how the fork tube travels after the dropout...beware of the knockoffs floating around on Ebay. Darrin.

darinb123
Don't know why it's not gold.... They called this a "cool" head.... My 78 YZ80 has a gold DG "radial" head. Man, I have enjoyed all the pics....
Kevin Harlow

Sometimes they made it to the machine shop without giong to the anodizer. Especially on short runs. I suppose the MR50's were very short runs. Hope this helps.

Nice bike. Is that it's current condition? My step brother had one of those B.I.T.D.

Oh Yeah, pics are a few days old is all. Wife was ****ed when she saw the pics left in the digital camara..... "Did you bring that bike in to take these pictures?" No honey, a stranger came and set it in front of the christamas tree, and used our new camera taking pics without stealing either one" Kevin's correct.....DG only made a few if these heads and pipes for this bike.
JohnnyJohnson OMAS DirtSlinger
Byron or PK should know how to reach Bottema

Could any of you DG experts give me any info on this frame. The serial number has been filed and painted over somewhere along the line, so I can't learn anything from that. Could someone give me any info based on the pictures, model, approximately timeframe, etc? Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: Pics a few posts below.

I want my DG Vulcan to be part of this thread

Kevin Harlow

Thanks for introducing me and my brother to Bmx. You had a shop in Brea and my bro Tony Mitchell and Dino Bartoli and me used to hangout. You took us to a race in Azusa. 78-80 I think. I was the kid on the FMF who sucked. Anyway I saw your name on here and wanted to say hey. I ended up in GA with a kid who races now. Brandon Murphy National #1 NBL. Tony still has his DG jersey and JT pants.
BenOr
Plainsbikesouth -

That era is supposed to have the prism decal on the gusset and yellow (or gold) for the other decals. Black ink on Gold prism for the HT decal.

The Vulcan (stupid trekky name?) looks great! Much better than black.
plainsbikesouth
Sweet thanks. Do you know the model or appoximate year?

I'll have to pick up a pair of those prism gusset stickers too. Do you know where I can find the headtube decal you mention? I have one, but its like the one on the Vulcan above.

Thanks

Thanks for the compliment Empi, I am looking forward to building it once I find out all I can about it, which is odd because I am more of a frame/fork collector when it comes to BMX, but that one needs to be complete. Sweet Vulcan by the way.
