well judging by that sticker, which has a date that says "1938", then "45"
i'd guess on the other side of that sticker it says 1983 (1938 + 45)
like some "45 years of booger welds" commemeration sticker.
thats probably where the "1983" comes from.

In 82/83 or so SE Racing did have murray make a version of the Mauler, but it was rejected on the basis of poor quality.
Maybe a little later on they had murray make the basher for them???
Scot would be the best to answer this one.

From the dropouts, looks like an SE-badged Team Murray with Landing Gear forks. From the welds, I'd assume that's a steel frame. I had no idea these existed, but....they did. Even as a "cheap" bike, if the price was right, it would be neat to have. It's some BMX history, man!

I agree it is still a very cool example of old school bmx, just seemed a little odd to me is all
I thought it would have been from around 79 or something with welds like that, thats why i asked LOL
it would be a neat bike to build because not everyone has one...

Wow - that is worth having for the decals alone, especially if you are an SE collector. Strangely enough, my first bike was a Murray which I promptly broke, because I got it from Halfords (a big cycle and car accessory retailer) they had a breakage poloicy where they had to replace a broken product, so they replaced my Murray with a chrome one of these (no decals though), in fact I went through three of them, hee hee. Geometry wise it actually worked.
Trivial info: 13/16 seat post.

Considering the use of your new screen name, you should know better.
SE Racing entered into a partnership with Murry in which they built a 20" and 24" under the SE name. The bike is legit...

Can someone tell me more about that Murray partnership...I remember the ads for the SE/Murray Mauler 24" bikes, but nothing about these "Basher"s. And I'm wondering why about the whole thing...I mean, in 82/83, SE was kicking but with high quality stuff...why did they need to pair up with Murray? How many of the SE tagged Murrays existed?
Scot? Care to address this one?

1980 is the first mention I read of the Basher. It was originally a looptail 100% chromoly racer. The blurb in bmx action says that an aluminum version is also available. That is what I believe I have here. I bought it nos about 10 years ago in Chula Vista, Ca. Its basically a Race Inc. RA-7 frame with Basher stickers but thats how it shipped from SE.
I had an SE Basher in '82, which I bought new mail order from, I think, Rockville BMX in Maryland. Either there or Wooden Wheels in Delaware.
It looked like none of these pictures, and was painted blue. Looptail, long front end, large diameter downtube and all that. Probably CRMO. Wish I had pictures of it, but I remember it fondly. Black Landing Gear. I haven't a clue what happened to that bike. I think I traded it for a Redline MX2.

Yep bv, that was the chromoly version. You rarely see those around these days.

Ok I can shed some light on this. SE and Murray had a partnership in the early 82 they made the cheaper model frame such as Mauler,Basher and Bronco they also made a knockoff of the Landing Gear Lite's at that time SE was making the rest in house. They wanted to come out with some of the cheaper model's so they had them made by Murray for SE. Remember at this time SE was always backordered becuase everybody wanted them but the price was 189.00 F&F when all other where 129.00 . So they had Murray come up with a bike that was priced so all kids could have a SE even if they really did not make it and it was priced right so parents did not say "400 for a bike your crazy!" A 189.00 bike complete but they also had all Knockoff parts on it that's how they could sell so cheap.
