OM, I remember some SoCal guys coming up every now and then and yeah, we locals usually got smoked.I raced 16 Expert and raced against all the SS Team guys, I almost always got beat but I had fun. Merritt was a COOOOOL track, both of them. Reilley1 posted pics of me at Merritt bitd, around 1975. Can't remember what class I raced at the Gold Cup but I have some pics of me there. There was a guy that raced for Webco, I wanna say Rick Miller but I know the first name Rick for sure, he came up with some SoCal guys. I came down to SoCal with the Silver Shield guys and raced at Yarnell and Saddleback(won a heat race there), tried to race Randall Ranch but entries were full so we went to Saddleback, at least I got to ride the track a few times, it was cool, tried to race at WSA but hurt my foot the night before and couldn't but we all went there the night before and rode WSA, all the pics I have down south Lee's brother took and I got copies, got a pic of me and TL sitting on top of the fence at WSA. I'll have Reilley1 post the few pics I have of me at Yarnell, Saddleback and WSA. Scared myself on Bonzai Hill so I raced the lower start at Saddleback. I heard Bonzai clamed alot of frames, parts and bones, pretty gnarly as I remember it

I can only find two photos and am anxious to dig around my mom's house for more when I visit next time. These pics were taken on back to back weekends in early summer 1984 at Lums Pond in Newark, Delaware. I was 13 years old (#14 w/ a bunch of stickers) and at the time riding a CW with blue tires and checkered pads.

Spike, do you mean Rick Collins? He rode for Webco and hung out / lived with Chuck Robinson (founder of Robinson Racing.) Short stocky kid with brown hair. Sound familiar?

Yeah, Rick Collins sounds familiar. A few guys that rode for Webco came up to Merritt one time, Rick I think was one of them. When I first saw a Webco frame it was at Merritt and I called it a Rick's Bike Shop frame and I believe Dan Oakley said no, it's a Webco. Webco had a newspaper style catalog that had cool Rick's pics in it, wish I still had it, like everything else.

yo spike!! Ricks's Bike shop!!

Great thread, can I add some UK flavour to it?

Over the water jump (hee hee water jump) into the pro section, which was just and extra berm.

Deddington in Oxfordshire, my local track back in the day, 1983. #512 Redline PL20, custom build.

And me going out in my semi, I never really won much, but I was stoked to be a moto filler.

TOTALLY Self indulgent photo's
Rear view of me table topping off into the sunset @ 5 dock skatepark.

Later that night , front view of me TT & clearing the Sydney Opera House.

Unfortunately they cropped me out of this race picture where I had just overtaken PK , he dropped his foot to early in that corner , Mick Wiltshire had a bad start at the gate & was never in the race.

I really should crack open my document safe & sort thru
all the old pix from bitd , instead of relying on magazine photo's
Where was that second messed up photo taken of you Coast VL ? I can't place it...
5 Dock Skatepark , best public skatepark a local council ever built , you could grab big air everywhere there......

Last straight at Blacktown. They could have used my name on the damn pic! Thats the only pic I have of me racing anywhere.
KOSY-MOTO
Yeah no name.. Bastards!!!
Jet Black
Well Coast VL at least they didn't call you Leigh Casper , lots of amusing typeo's in the mags back then , it could have been worse. I bet David Lee , wasn't too happy about having some other guys photo attached to his short bio....
Matt has most my old magazines that may have pix of me racing in it... I'll grab a shoe box or 2 of my old photo's from my safe & see what I can find , there's easily 10 shoe box's full of unsorted pix in there so it may take a while....There should be some more river jumping pix in there somewhere I hope...They were the best jump photo's

One Racing....I always liked this shot, cuz there is some underlying drama for speculation. 2 guys walking back, with freshly soiled jerseys. One guy lagging far behind carrying his number plate in his hand.....You fill in the blanks, your guess is as good as mine. Newer Red White and Blues with Graphites, and Gaiters, must be '82.

One Jumping...I still like the flavor of the old Red White and Blues, and Bill Walters....Late '80 or early '81....

Good times....cool to see this thread come back up....

Tom Erickson
Good shots of Shorewood BMX too. I was riding for BJ's in 1982 could that be me walking? I'll try to post some of me too.
Tom Erickson
This photo is from the Minneapolis Armory winter 1981/2. Thats you Ted behind my moto with Shawn Sheely, Jeff Manning, and Troy Lembke in the 17X class. I think you had won the Worlds already by then.

I don't have any good pics of me jumping loaded on the computer. This one will have to do. This was taken at Elkart National when I was an A Pro. That's why I ran # 429.

Mr. Erickson. I heard you were here, and been wondering when we might finally hook up! Great to hear from you! I got the EM and have you locked in now.

Interesting shots! If 17X was running, and I was lining up after that....Must have been waiting for a Trophey Dash line up....???Or maybe was just hangin with you guys...???

I think that looks like Chris Cox, in my racing shot with the freshly soiled sleeve, did he ride for BJ's? I have to ask his brother Dana...

It is facinating how much info can be read from everyones old pictures isn't it!?

I see I was sporting the dark/light blue Type 2 Haro plate that I am dying/trying to hook up with in your photo.....(Anyone? Please?, Pretty Please?) lol

I was also trying in vain to figure out who we ran with that had the Big Block Ford number.....429...That answers that!

here are a couple pics of me jumping bitd.the first pic is in new orleans,1981.notice the back scenery-this was a track we built on some vacant land that remained vacant for quite a while.the hoods you see were my bmx buddies.
the second pic is at a local ball park also in new orleans.the park had these random dirt mounds that we moulded into jumps.they don't look like much but they sure threw us.
couldn't find any pics of me racing.i was a ****ty racer anyways!!!!!

Nice thread, here are two of my faves:

Brooklyn Park 1983, followed by Jeff Manning.

St. Paul, Roy Wilkins NBL race - Freestyle show 1982.

Ted Carl
Bunny Hoppin the Handlebars...classic.

That would definately be Eric Levander on the left. Shawn going over the top. Who is on the right? Could that be Mr Butterfield (Mrs Butterworth)????
Shawn Sheely MN-1
Butternuts? No. That's Eric on the left, damned if I can remember the guy on the right - used to hang out with Paul Kater (sp) - damn brain cells. Anyone?

I crashed right after the photo was taken, hit really hard an knocked a tooth out - although I had made the jump many times before...

Had to do an emergency tooth removal the next morning at the dentist (Sunday) then back to the track for the race that day (humbly which I somehow won).
Ted Carl
lol... I was wondering about that! I had noticed that those were CW bars on the first bike, and it looked awful close!

I always chose carefully, who's bikes I went over! It is funny how that last inch or two, made all the difference! RL V-bars, easy, ....CW pro bars......Tough Hop!!!!!!!

Jeff K. had Star Bars on his Sting (longer head tube) That was about my limit!, and he would get mad whenever I scuffed his Cal-lite, and knock the plate loose, when I nicked it!!!

Good times Shawn! Great Pics too!
Shawn Sheely MN-1
Yea, I swear the guy on the right switched bars just before the event - we had been practicing earlier in the week and I had no problems - I couldn't figure out why I hit so hard until someone gave me this pic.
