I'm a bit confused with this, Q1,are they all different or the one model? . I know that there was a model with a bottom bridge and one without. I have one without the bottom bridge (Bill said its a proline II which is ok)
......but ,Q2, does this mean its not a carrera and not PL20.
Q3 what are the correct decals for my F/F

Lew.
BEN
That is a early Redline Proline II 81-82 and a
Carrera uses the same frame but the stickers
say carrera! Someone just put MX II stickers
on that one!
Lewis
so if the carrera uses the same frame how do I choose the decals?????
is it in the serial # 353862.
I guess what I am saying is how did you know it was a proline II and not a carrera from the pic??
c3nthusiast
The only differences I have seen are in the rear. Later ones have a small gussett behind the seat tube. Someone mentioned it before that RL Osbourne used a PL-20 prior to the Rl-20. His Pl-20 had the gussett.
sdasdasas
My 85 has the gussett
rick kast
i had that frame in 82, it cracked in 83 behind seat tube, sent it in thinking - cool get a new frame- came back with the gusset welded in.
if anyone has a frame set like lewis pictured, i am looking for one.
BEN
The Carrera and Proline II are the same frames
with different stickers! The Carrera came only as
a complete bike as I understand it and the serial
#'s don't mean anything!I think the little gusset
started in 85! and the cross brace behind the BB
started in 83 or for sure by 84!
mr coasterbrake
the bike belonging to R.L. that had the seatstay gusset was in early/mid-1983 (which was the only time he rode a "PL". he began using "prostylers" in late '83, onward)
frazer
As far as I've been able to figure, Redline only used the little gussett behind the seat tube during '83, and perhaps into '84. Then it disappeared again. I've owned two PL-20s, one with the gussett which the original owner specified had come with Carrera II decals ('83), and the other without a gussett that had the remains of it's original decals and was clearly an '85. I also have a 102b ('83 from the decal design) that has the gussett. My research tells me that '85 PL-20s had serial #s starting with RC.

To the best of my knowledge:
Original Proline
PL-20 Carrera (I) circa '82
PL-20 Carrera II circa '83
Then they just went to PL-20
Lewis
I"M getting somewhere....can anyone post a pic of the decals carrera or PL20 for this frame taking into account the no bottom bridge.
I have a set of PL20 decs here that are the gray black background and the letters yellow to red.Are these the right ones or too new.??

My 84 Carrera II does not have the little gusset
behind the seatube/seatclamp area. I think that
started in 85? My Carrera II has PL-20 stickers
on the seatube, I think in 83 they started calling
the PL-20's.
c3nthusiast
Every CARRERA II I have seen has PL-20 in black on the seat tube. Regular PL-20's have it in red/yellow letters. The fork decals on the CARRERA II just say REDLINE. All others will have the black bars next to the REDLINE logo. Just my observations. I'm no expert.

Bill
The PL20, Carrera, & Proline II are one and the same.

Redline built a frameset to replace the Proline, it was called the Proline II. It was later called the PL20.

The frameset was used to build a complete bike, it was called the Carrera.

This question seems to keep surfacing and the answer is always the same. DECALS....

Yes, you can find very slight differences, that little gusset for instance but the frameset is based on the Proline II.

Hey Lewis,

I think this is what you're looking for (at BMXStop.com):

Well, sorta. RL didn't do a very good job with these, as they should have a white border and don't.

Good luck with it!
Lewis
Thankyou all, That's the decals I will go for Frazer.
Lewis
Would this 82 Carrera be the model without the bottom brake bridge??
BEN
It would be without! I have that exact replica with
nos decals. I just need the toptube pad if anyone can help. I will try to post pics soon.
Ben
Lewis
yeah I would like to see it. Also when I got mine it had the blue rims just like this pic.

I have a 1981 chrome Proline II f/f for sale if anyones interested. I bought the frame new about 8 years ago from a bike shop and picked up the used tapered forks on ebay. Its been a display bike its whole life, I also have a used white velcro redline pad set for it, an extra original set of proline II downtube decals with the correct white outlines with the dates on the back from the early 80s and the redline box the frame came in. I built the bike up once and the drop outs are in EXCELLENT shape but am looking to part it out as I am thinning out the herd and have too many bikes and not enough room! I also have a complete repainted restored 79 or 80 (dont know how to tell the difference) white proline to sell. I have pics if some ones interested in either one or just some parts, email me directly and we can deal thanks Dave...
EMPI
wow, killer redline ad, I remember drooling over Redline carrera w/ blue parts at the Bike Gallery. memories!!!

Thanks to all that have responded to my post. The Proline II frame does NOT have the lower bridge it is a 1981 vintage. I will need some help to post pics of it but right now I have no time. I have to go to work , so tonight I will try thanks Dave.

Did Carrera's ever come in anything other than Chrome. i dontthink so, but I could very well be wrong. I have heard that theree might have been a white and a red Carrera - pre-production models that Stu Thomsen used.

Stu any comments?
JOHN F
i did see a carrera in white a long time ago when i was a kid it had the white vinyl pads with red parts on it i can never forget that bike in the store i think it was $599.00 back then 1981
JOHN F
i also have the same frame as lewis.... but white it had the 1980 proline decals on it with the arrows on bottom bar and oval on front and the mx2 seat pole decal on it but not the same forks i have the first make 5 inch proline forks on it.
JOHN F
you know whats funny the add above says on the carrera frame pad ..pl-20 carrera hmmmmm
subwax
Errrr.............sorry, what funny about that?
JOHN F
i guess it makes it a proline carrera but not sure from pics on here bottom toob where sticker goes did it just say carrera or pl20 carrera cant rember im not sure .
subwax
The difference, as I understand things, between the PL20 and the Carrera is that the Carrera was a complete bike with a PL-20 frame. The PL-20 was a f&f option only.

I think there is a fair degree of confusion here betwen PL-20's and Carrera's, as well as Carrera I's and Carrera II's.

As far as I am aware (and I am by no means an expert) the Carrera and Carrera II frames only came in chrome. I have heard arguments to the contrary, so wanted to know if anyone knew about and white / red Carrera's, NOT PL-20's.
c3nthusiast
CARRERA II's only came in CHROME.
JOHN F
i wish i had scanner i found old copyed add from bmx museum 1981 redline proline 2 kit *specifications the finish comes- red, white, chrome .
subwax
Thats a proline, not a Carrera. Different bikes, same frame.
