1 1/8" Stem Install - too tight to fit over forks

Intermediate Group: Members Posts: 113 Joined: 26-April 01 From: Boston, MA Member No.: 173	I have tried removing the clamping bolts and prying it apart with screwdrivers... no luck. For whatever reason it simply will not fit down over fork - even with some whacks from a rubber mallet. It is a wicked rare Brooklyn Machine Works stem going on a set of threadless landing gears... so I reluctant to bring out the file/dremel Any other ideas folks?
