Frame Identification and dating by Serial Numbers

Guests	I would like to start a thread that includes the name of a bike manufacturer, what their serial numbers look like, and if possible how to date the frame by serial number. This is not for any one bike in particular. I would just like to see those with the knowledge impart some of that here, so people like me without the knowledge can always refer back when we have questions. Please contribute.
