Question about v-brakes

I have a mid 90s Redline cruiser frame that only uses v-brakes for the rear. I've never had a bike with v-brakes, so the question is can I still use an old lever and cable from my caliper style brakes or does it need a specific lever?

Long pull lever for V brakes, short for Canti's and U-brakes.

Thanks. Think I might just drill a hole in the forks and use the old front brakes.
