Just posted a Podcast with George Costa of Rennen in which he give us an exclusive first look at the Rennen Decimal Gearing System.

This is an awesome innovation, and George gives the Vintage community a firm shoutout for helping him hatch the concept.

If you have ever wanted to add a little or drop a little from your standard gear, due to track conditions, check out the link below.

Then discuss.

Enjoy!

This is very cool.

Question:

Why is there no half-tooth, or quarter-tooth equivalents?

A lot of guys want to go up or down a half tooth, and it appears from the chart that there are quite a few steps missing.

For example: from 43 x 16 to 44 x 16 (where I assume allot of folks will be concentrating.)

I hope I explained that so it is understood.

I would seem simpler, if there was a 43, 43.25, 43.50, 43.75, 44 type of sequence going on here as most know their increases to be close as such.

Not dissing in anyway here so please don’t take it that way. This is great stuff, but we BMX’ers aren’t all the brightest. This is a confusing chart here.

you can get .25T tooth increments now by using different sizes ie 46/17 vs 43/16 etc

what you cant do is go lower and there is a need in the .1t range

going down lower than .7T doesnt work we tried it and going higher .2T doesnt work either

hope that helps explain it

thanks

That's a great idea. That makes it much easier to literally "split a tooth" for those wanting to fine tune their gearing.

Hopefully these rings will mesh well with a majority of the chains out there.

George, do you spec a specific chain, or is the PCD compatible w/ most BMX chains on the market?

Also, do you anticipate accelerated chain wear?

it should work with all 9 speed and below on the market I always push ppl towards a SRAM or SHIMANO product as these companies have good reputations making quality chains that are consistent in dimensions

each tooth profile for each size is optimized to minimize any wear efffects and our original design has been so bomb proof that I do not anticipate any issues. The smallest tooth size (0.2T) was extensively tested under some good loads by one of our riders with no signs of problems.

This is awesome!!! This is thinking completely thinking outside the box. But it does have me thinking. Does a 1/4 tooth really make a measurable difference on the track?

How do you properly use this chart when switching between tire diameters; either matching cruiser and class or going from 1 1/8" to 1 3/8"? Do we need to know the tooth pitch of these inbetween gears?

Great podcast! Good info and I'm glad George mentioned the tire issue. I had the same problem when Iswitched from micro knobs to power blocks. It ws so frustrating that I had to switch to a 1.65 rear.

I explain in the podcast that these charts do not include tire information if you'd like to do that then the only way in my mind is to actually compute the rollouts

ex: 43.7/16*20*pi=171.52 cruiser 41/18*24*pi=171.65 difference between these 2 setups is 0.133 inches (~1/8) of real rollout

Because tires are so all over the place we all need to start getting used to doing a little math, it wont hurt you

If you follow my latest article in the BMXer and enter your different tire information you would prob find that you could have matched your rollout very closely

thanks
