I am looking for input as to the earliest organized BMX races held in the great state of Texas. I raced in an event on September 1st, 1974 at the AMA sanctioned Rabbitt Run motorcycle motocross track in Plano, Texas. A second "Bike-X" race was held there before the end of the year in 1974. Other tracks that sprung up in 1975 include Armadillo BMX, which was also held at a motorcycle motocross track, Florence BMX in Mesquite run by the McDaniels' family, and Sunrise Optimist BMX in Fort Worth.

Let's hear from other pioneer BMX racers from Texas.

Don't know about the first. But Armadillo Downs was one of the best tracks ever. It's to bad the new Armadillo can't say the same.

Thanks to Gene Roden and Sam Rudd, Amarilllo Texas had it's first race in the Old Bull Barn at the Fair Grounds in 1977. Shortly after land was donated on South Washington for the new outdoor facility RWR BMX which hosted the 1978 ABA Summernationals. In the mid 80's the track was moved to Western and Loop 335. Then out on Canyon Eway for a few years. Now we have a new track Called Tornado Alley south of I 40 on Eastern St.

The guys from Alamo Heights Schwinn (now Bikeworld) in San Antonio ran a few races at Olmos Park around 1976.
Thats about the same time Doug McGuff got a track going in San Antonio at "Cyclorama." It was a big motorcycle motocross facility.
The Corales family opened "MC's" in or around 1978 in the south part of town and then did a north track off of San Pedro shortly thereafter.
Then came Bernie with "Lonestar BMX" sometime around 1980.
Cibolo Valley happened shortly thereafter just outside San Antonio.

We also used to travel up to Austin and race the VFW track just off I-35. It seems like that was the late '70's.
The 1978 "Schwinn Tour" went through Midland-Odessa and I recall going to a national there.
