First of all, let me just say I did this out of curiosity, not to pick on one sanction or the other.

Second of all, the Sept 1997 issue of "BMX Today" was handy -near my computer.
Thirdly, I was trying to see if bmx has declined by seeing how many tracks there were in the USA -ten years ago vs. today. I took a bmx today from my stash, counted the tracks, then got on the computer and counted tracks listed today. I left out Canada and Puerto Rico on purpose- just the USA.
Now, this does not take into accout that:
A: We have no clue if a track was actually there in 1997 just because it is in the magazine { 2007 for that matter, when looking at the computer listing, a track could be gone}
B: I did not take into account the number of indoor temp tracks, I just counted tracks period, if they were listed. Some or most of these indoor temp tracks could be long gone, but what the heck, they were listed, they got counted.
C: Somebody is probably going to hammer me for constantly saying old school is better, well, I do not consider 1997 as being "old school", probably even too new for "mid-school". The bottom line is, I just wanted to see what had happened in the last ten years to tracks.
D: We can not possibly see from this if numbers of racers are down, I.E., the same track could have had 35 motos in 1997, still be listed on here in 2007, but have 15 motos, clearly down. This is only track count, that is it.
OK, without further typing and pontificating and spinning, let us see some numbers here:
Total NBL tracks 1997: 120
Total States: 30
Total NBL tracks 2007: 123
Total States 28
Net gain of 3 tracks, net loss of two states.
States with gains of numbers of tracks:
Cal from 5 to 10
Fla. from 14 to 22
Indiana {drama state, LOL} from 5 to 9
States with a big goose egg { had tracks then lost them all} : Texas, Colorado, Hawaii, Rhode Island, Louisiana
States that gained tracks { had zero nbl tracks but had since built one}: Mississippi, Missouri, West Virginia.
OK, people who took stats in college: what does this all mean? Analyze please.
