I found a pair of SUNTOUR roller cam brakes in my stash recently. I remember at one time HUTCH was supposedly going to market a special front fork/brake based on these brakes. I scanned through the FREESTYLIN back issues but couldn't come up with anything. Anyone have any info on them?

PS-I need some springs and hardware to complete the brake if someone has some parts.

Good luck on finding those suntour parts. The Vintage MTB guys love those. You will be better off finding a whole used set.

As far as the Hutch brakes. I've only come across on person here in this forum who has what he says is a prototype trickstar with not only front but back rollercams. He also will not reveal how the front works with the potts mod. I have a pic of it here if you'd like to see.

The Hutch freestyle canti brake systems (front and rear as rimspoke indicated) were never a production item unfortunately so finding a set for sale is basically impossible. The brakes were built using Suntour XC roller cam brake components along with several custom pieces that were fabricated by Bill Grove (Titron) who was the brains behind all Hutch component designs at that time. installation of the brakes required welding canti mounts onto the frame and fork as well. The member rimspoke is referring to is Tom Gass who does in fact have the brakes in question and is very tight lipped about the details for fear that they would be reproduced.

Johan of JJRBMX has some great pics of the bikes and brakes owned by Tom Gass here...

what i found out is the brakecable gos to the stem with a barrel adjuster on the stem-through the fork to a jamb nut on the centerpull plate under the flexplate..inside the fork at the bottom of the pipe which has the fork threds has a plastic insert sleeve so the cable dont rub on metal. what i cant figure out is how the center pull plate dont twist, or maybe it does and that is why its not a production item.

Check out that whole Trick Star that Tom Gass owns. What an Amazing bike, it has longer then standard fork pegs in a slightly higher location and the rear standers are welded to the loop & chain stay putting them on an angle. All that and the rollorcam brakes... that should've been the Trick Star II

Very Cool Bike ! to say the least

Here are a set of the brakes that hutch use for those set ups. Suntour made Several several version of the roller cam brake. I have never seen a set of the correct versions being sold. Let alone NOS. Good luck. If you dare.....

I think it would go through the Potts mod, down the fork and reworked through the traditional front brake hole in the fork.

Yeah I suppose you'd invert the piece that spreads the brake arm rollers and have some type of hinge part to allow the cable to pull up as that piece gets pulled down. Could always contact grove son. He's usually over in the vintage MTB forums. He has tons of info on the grove innovation bikes his dad did and the triton stuff too.
