Frame Identification and dating by Serial Numbers

I would like to start a thread that includes the name of a bike manufacturer, what their serial numbers look like, and if possible how to date the frame by serial number. This is not for any one bike in particular. I would just like to see those with the knowledge impart some of that here, so people like me without the knowledge can always refer back when we have questions. Please contribute.

I know this much about S&M after talking with them before. Doesnt really date them but can give you a ballpark figure anyway:

Serial #'s started at 1000,

Holmes frame is HXL????
Challeneger is SCL????

He told me that my Challenger SCL1320 would have been the 320 one they built, but was unsure as to a real date he could give me.

Oh I can shed a bare amount of light on CW Racing also.

The first frames were "hand stamped" on the bootom bracket. Later models were stamped better I guess you could say. Meaning first ones were a series of numbers not in any straight line or properly spaced. I cant find my old CW ZR1's number right now, but will post when I do, that number should at least say pre 81' or later 81'.

Older US made GT frames can also be dated by using the serial # .

Danno the serial number thing with s&m apparently doesnt apply...i got a challenger from the last time they were made with 990 mounts and the serial number is CXL0187..i had a challenger with canti mounts before that and the number was CXLKUSK0558..the 990 mount one had the number on the outside of the dropout..the canti mount had it on the inside of the dropout. my s&m cruiser is JOX060. I also have a s&m fkab...Formerly Known As Bennett...the number is on the bottom bracket and hand stamped...sm bk 1406. i doubt you could get a date off a s&m frame by looking at the serial number anymore.

regarding S&M serials; i think the first post about them refers to the older ones built by SE RACING. i have several of those and it is how they were done. i also have a newer "in house" made S&M and that no longer follows that pattern. -chris
