I've got one that I had custom powdered to match the orange scrambler grips I found in my old schwinn shop. Pep proably remembers it cause I blew out the tube airing it up in his basement when we had a get together at his house in Chi-town.!!!

Does anyone know if Scrambler Competitions ever came in yellow? I didn't think so thought I'd ask anyway

Let's keep this thread going. Really wish all the photograph links still worked.

Here is a (79?) Mag Scrambler SX100 I picked up this summer. It needs bars/stem and a seat. I planned on adding an Ashtabula stem I have and some good Schwinn box bars to fix it up a bit. Otherwise it's a pretty good survivor.

I'm another Chicago burbanite and grew up drooling over the new Schwinns at the Village Peddler in Crystal Lake. I can still smell that bike shop in my head.

Cool thread, so I just snagged this exact same model, SN HQXXXX. The mags are yellow Lester's with a coaster brake. Only two issues:

1. The coaster brake is acting funny...it's stops as it should, but often turns soft a bit before catching in the drive direction. I've never taken apart a coaster brake hub, so I guess I tear it apart and see what's up.

2. The frame is much more faded than the one pictured in gts340's post. very minor rust here and there, should I just clean up the frame and wax/polish it some or what would be the impact if I re-painted? I might do that but the painted-on decals would be gone for ever.

I'll post a picture later...it has nice yellow tuff pads (vinal with tuff snaps) as well.

-Roy

I love this post and The Schwinn Scrambler. However, the Schwinn Scrambler is the 3rd mass production bmx bike. The first was the Mattel Bronco followed soon by the Mattel Stallion. Both were produced in massive quantity beginning in 1962-63. Each bike had knobby tires, suspension, and a cool head mounted swing arm pivot point. There was also a mount for the "VROOM" engine which is still a highly priced collectible item.

Despite this bike rarely competing in a race, it was designed as an upgraded off road dirt bike. This bike has never been given its proper place in bmx history. Mattel was first.
