Like a race? He'll kill us. I met him again for the first time in 22 years, last Saturday. I was just a kid and I really looked up to him (back in '86). Well, very understandably, he had no clue who I was, but he chatted with me for about an hour, sharing war stories about a particular race where he was giving Ronnie Anderson some big trouble. He made the story sound like they were in fighter jets! It probably looked a lot like it. He later finished the story with his fondness and respect of Ronnie, because Ronnie was so good and that he did things the hard way.
Really thoughtful and cool guy. He knew that conversation would absolutely make my day, and it sure did!
As soon as I get the track hammered out, I'm in. Just don't hurt us too bad, D.

Lonewolf, I got a feeling from reading your post, this race pictured may be one of the races DD was speaking of, in regards to his battles with "Crazy Ronnie A". Its from the Murray world cup/'86 I believe. DD and I had a simliar conversation a lil wayz back, at a track parent/rider meeting. When I showed him the pictures I took he really was suprised, and his emotion was obvious. For those that werent there, first place in the pro cruiser main paid $5k. I was at the finish line watching/waiting for the riders to come around the bend. Coming around the last turn, Ronnie had DD by a solid 3-4 bikes, but DD ran him down like a dragster!! He crossed the line 1 bike in front, and ghost rode his cruiser!!! I will never forget the excitement on his face, clenching his fist and screaming yes!!...Greatest race I've ever witnessed, from my bmx hero,,,,,,and I was there, and I mean right there!,, (IMG: style_emoticons/default/sun_bespectacled.gif) claude DD is on zeronine/#5--murray world cup '86? QUOTE DD Leone was the fastest I ever had to race locally (I was 22 when he was 17, and we raced in the 17X class at local races in south Louisiana and south Mississippi). You could actually feel the vacuum he created as he left the starting gate. I would go down to Gretna BMX in Louisiana to do starts against DD and to race him to improve my own racing and it worked. His racing in the amateur classes in 1982 was a scary mix of power and fluid perfection. His skill and speed won him a Redline ride and, in 1982, he doubled or tripled at every ABA National he attended wearing a Redline uniform. Then, he tripled (almost pulling a quad) at the 1982 ABA Grands... winning 17X, 17 Cruiser, and 15 and over Trophy Dash (he pooped out in 15 and over Open... leaving the door open to Paul Gossrau). I can't remember a moto, qualifier, or main that DD was in where he wasn't out front that weekend... I believe that DD has a hand running the new Gretna BMX track in south Louisiana these days... Richard Vogt bmxmountainbiker P.S. By the way, at that race Brian Patterson tripled as a Pro winning the #1 Pro plate as a rookie, and Steve Veltman walked away with both 20" and Cruiser National #1 plates... QUOTE

Very cool addition to the thread. D.D. was so big, back then, I was staring at him, as usual, and he unintentionally stepped on the wooden handle of a heavy garden rake as he was walking toward the starting hill (in Gonzales, La.). SNAP! He went through it like it was a match stick. And then looked down to see what he had done. -Imagine the pain those 401's had to go through.
He still looks like he could throw you 20 feet.
