that's some pretty cool pics. i think you can still make the same jump at the cannons club. its pretty vacant up there.

kevin

Kevin,

You're probably right. I think I will go check it out one day when my bike is done. Would be cool to snap some pics of how it is now.

P,

Imagine if we thought of hitting that jump like a vert ramp BITD. Instead of all those brutal landings we used to make there. Pretty cool that we had a jump right up against Diamond Head Crater HUH?

Later,
J

I remember the SAND too at the Mckinley track. Check this pic out. Maile Beach race. Now that was some serious sand. The only part that had dirt was the starting area. The rest was sand over dirt. I had a hard time just getting thru the track the sand was so deep at some points.

(IMG:http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee265/happydoof/Maile1.jpg)

Clarene Waialeale. Now thats a name from the past huh? Red FMF wasn't it? I remember Gabriel Moniz, Hows about Daniel Moniz and Mark Gentry. Wow, I am surprised how much memories some pics can trigger.

Here's another pic. Rockne Tang, Rolland Tang and me goofing off at the construction site where Longs is now on Waialae Ave. You can see St. Louis HS in the background.

(IMG:http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee265/happydoof/Rockne2C20Rolland2C20Jer1.jpg)

The pic of Mark at Cannons is sick! Keep posting my brother!

JK

HOLY CATS, Maile beach? I had no idea there were races out that side of the island.. what an epic picture, thanks for posting that one.

I think you're right about Clarence, red FMF. I can't say for sure. One guy that rode with us alot that started with an FMF was Reid Kawamae, recall that name? He rode FMF and later changed to a Cooks Brothers chrome bike, beautiful stead for sure. Gabriel was in the class of 81 like myself, but I don't remember Daniel.. Mark Gentry, yeah rings a bell, mos def.

How about Michael Woo? He lived right across the street from Triangle Park, adjacent to the Catholic church on the corner. Man, during summer time the wind would blow down from inside the valley and all the dirt/dust kicked up from us riders would send clouds of "locus-like dirt" invasions straight to those houses.. OMG the parents would go ballistic LOL.. eventually remember the city put up those stupid pipes and chains right in front of the jumps? We'd cut the chains, city would replace them, etc

That construction site pic is truely old school. I wasn't aware of the little dirt mounds in the back, but I now confess being enlightened by the pope of "dope pictures" and that would be you kind sir!

Another rider named Tayne Toma lived only 2 blocks from Triangles. Wonder where is??

To refresh your memory about Reid Kawamae, I dedicate this following picture.. taken at the McKinley sand and dirt track. Reid loved the track so much, he is about to kiss the holy ground from which his blessed name will always be cemented, in history that is LOL.

(IMG:http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh82/perfectnut/reid-k-crashing.jpg)

I wish against the psychological construct known as time that I had discovered this site long ago, at one time I had many BMX racing pictures and also dirt jumping pictures that I could have shared. Alas, I do not have too many left to share.. But I will not rest until I dig up everything I can possibly find to spread the love of BMX yesteryear, the real birth of passion, my first love, BMX riding and dirt jumping.

Fine evening, fellow dirt lovers. LOL

I ride my road bike up Monssarrat Ave each time I head out to the east side, next time I will stop by and check out the jumps, should they still exist, that is.

You had to possess big nuts to charge that huge wall jump back then. Getting speed might have been an issue as the road went uphill facing the jump itself. I rather loved that jump because just before summer the landing part had more grass than the raw asphalt-like ground in mid-summer, made those teeth jarring landings a tad less brutal. Instead of losing the filings in your teeth that mommy and daddy just paid $5,000 dollars for, you merely compressed shavings in your knees.

Since we're on the Hawaiian things thread, here is a picture that I love, my guys, my dirt buds.

L to R:

Steven Cabebe, me, Daniel Lee, Michael Tyau, Tayne Toma, Eric Koichi Mitsunaga and Mark Miyashiro.. on the bike. The car belongs to Cosmo, the gentleman I thank for many of the pictures I still have in my possession..

One more thing (LAME question of the century) -- what is BITD?

**crawls into berm hole**

Cheers y'all..

Aloha Kevin! I thought it was you and Andy that did the GT tour in Mililani???? darn my pics are too big to attach here, If you check out www.os-bmx.com that's were I saw Andy's birthday pictures. He still rides good!
Wow sorry to hear about his family! He told me that he did not have much pictures of him riding.
I saw Wally's website.. Wow things have changed for him.
Have you heard from Adam or Jordan?
I miss riding over to honolulu...
I just lost my mother back in July... We are selling both houses back there. I live here in Dallas, TX with my wife and kids, I'm a front end manager for Costco. And I'm restoring a 84 Torker pro xl. I'm teaching my 8 year old son how to ride. He has it easy... he does not have to learn how to ride with slippers! lol
Well dude shoot me line again I'd like to hear from ya!

P,

I definately remember Michael Woo from right across from Triangles. As for those stupid pipes and chains. When the C&C put them up the first time......I cut the chain's....and got arrested for it. Was charged with vandalism. Needless to say my parents were not too happy. I got grounded for a month solid. No bike! And it was summer time. It was pure hell. You know how important riding was to us at the time.

That pic of your gang is so cool. I forgot many of the names but I recognize the faces. Keep posting any pics from BITD....Back In The Day......I am eating this up!

KL,

I used to race for McCully for a while. But, I spent alot of time hanging out at Safari Cycles. Jim was a real cool mellow guy. I wonder how he's doing. Do you have any idea of how I can get in touch with him? He used to take pics and videos at all the races. What I wouldn't pay to get a hold of those.

I'm trying to build a Team Jag. Just like the one I used to have. It's costing a small fortune. The prices on OG stuff is retarded. Heres a pic of my old bike.......(IMG:http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee265/happydoof/Jer20and20Rick1.jpg)

Here's the bike I'm building.......

(IMG:http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee265/happydoof/DSC05715.jpg)

I recently changed the bars to redline vbars and the stem to a redline double clamp. I also added some flight cranks. Living in the past I tell you!

Later Hawaiians,

jk

i think that wally at bikefactory still talks to him. that would be the best way. jim used to have racer video, a video editing business, but i'm not too sure if he still does it.
